{"id":8407,"date":"2008-05-14T10:17:29","date_gmt":"2008-05-14T17:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=8407"},"modified":"2013-01-07T10:20:44","modified_gmt":"2013-01-07T17:20:44","slug":"nau-rewards-exceptional-graduate-teaching-assistants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-rewards-exceptional-graduate-teaching-assistants\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU rewards exceptional graduate teaching assistants"},"content":{"rendered":"<table width=\"10%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"3\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gina Blue\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/blue.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nGina Blue<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hilary Nemchik\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/nemchik.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nHilary Nemchik<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Two NAU graduate students who encourage and inspire undergraduates received 2007-08 Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gina Blue<\/strong>, a graduate teaching assistant for Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages, and\u00a0<strong>Hilary Nemchik<\/strong>, a graduate teaching assistant for public speaking in the School of Communication, recently were honored for their teaching achievements and professional development.<\/p>\n<p>Each award winner received $1,000 and a plaque and were honored at a reception by the Graduate College and Faculty Development Program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are grateful for their talent, professionalism and dedication to their disciplines and their students,&#8221; said\u00a0<strong>Ramona Mellott<\/strong>, dean of the Graduate College.<\/p>\n<p>About 300 graduate students at NAU, or 5 percent, are teaching assistants. &#8220;Their contribution to undergraduate education at NAU is substantial,&#8221; Mellott noted.<\/p>\n<p>In March, NAU President\u00a0<strong>John Haeger\u00a0<\/strong>further cemented NAU&#8217;s commitment to graduate assistants by increasing their tuition remission from 50 percent to 75 percent for those who work at least 20 hours a week. Those who work between 10 and 19 hours a week received a 37.5 percent tuition remission.<\/p>\n<p>Blue hopes she is setting an example for undergraduates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My philosophy as a teacher is to be a role model for my students, to inspire them to continue learning Spanish and to assist them in learning the content of the course well,&#8221; Blue said.<\/p>\n<p>Nemchik finds teaching a challenging task and the award recognition &#8220;truly rewarding.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me, teaching is not just about dispersing information and hoping it sticks in the minds of students,&#8221; Nemchik said. &#8220;It is about knowing the students and sparking a curiosity that provokes them to go out and uncover new knowledge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Blue was nominated by\u00a0<strong>Joe Collentine<\/strong>, a professor in modern languages.\u00a0<strong>Mark Neumann<\/strong>, director for the School of Communication, nominated Nemchik.<\/p>\n<p>Other nominees included graduate teaching assistants\u00a0<strong>Janee D.
