Marchesi<\/strong>, a lecturer in the Department of English, was an award-winning finalist at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalbookawards.com\/\">2012 International Book Awards<\/a> in two fiction categories, Young Adult and Science-Fiction, for her debut novel\u00a0<em>Shelby and Shauna Kitt and the Dimensional Holes<\/em>. The young adult novel is a science-fiction\/fantasy tale about two twins with special talents who are asked to take part in a dangerous mission in another dimension. The International Book Award works to honor &#8220;knowledge, creativity, wisdom and global cooperation through the written word.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Luis Fernandez<\/strong>, professor of criminology and criminal justice, was elected vice president for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssp1.org\/\">Society for the Study of Social Problems<\/a>, an interdisciplinary community of about 1,800 scholars, practitioners, advocates and students interested in the application of critical, scientific and humanistic perspectives to the study of vital social problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Students working with NAU&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/SBS\/SUS\/Program\/Research-Teams\/\">Action-Based Research Teams<\/a> presented at Prescott College&#8217;s annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prescott.edu\/experience\/news\/actual-phd-symposium-2012.html\">Sustainability Education Symposium<\/a>. <strong>Krysta Best<\/strong>, <strong>Adam Davidson<\/strong>, <strong>Hesham Elnagar<\/strong>, <strong>Adrah Parafiniuk<\/strong>, <strong>Samson Swanick<\/strong> and<strong> Liz Wiggen<\/strong> participated in a panel called \u201cNAU\u2019s Action Research Teams: Sustainability and Civic Engagement in Action.\u201d The students are working to make stronger ties across the northern Arizona region on sustainability-related issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table width=\"10%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"3\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td background=\"FFFFFF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.nau.edu\/news-p\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/allegheny.jpg\" alt=\"students at allegheny\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ul>\n<li>Five students attended the Pathway to Civility:\u00a0National Conference of College Leaders at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.,\u00a0last week, along with <strong>Lori Poloni-Staudinger<\/strong>, associate professor of politics and international affairs. The students\u2014pictured from left, <strong>Shem Barlow<\/strong>, marketing and business major; <strong>Samantha Cross<\/strong>, criminal justice major; <strong>Angel Cerritos<\/strong>, journalism\u00a0major; <strong>Samantha Norton<\/strong>, dual psychology and criminal justice major; and <strong>Blaise Caudill<\/strong>, dual international affairs and French\u00a0major\u2014participated in debates, breakout sessions and a town hall-style meeting with other student leaders from across the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Diane Vosick<\/strong>, director of Policy and Partnerships for NAU&#8217;s Ecological Restoration Institute, appeared on the KAET show <em>Arizona Horizon<\/em> on May 22. Vosick was part of a panel that examined the health of Arizona&#8217;s forests and whether America&#8217;s history of fire suppression has actually contributed to the highly destructive &#8216;mega fires&#8217; now seen in Arizona on a regular basis. Watch the segment <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azpbs.org\/video\/vidlink.php?vidId=4503\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jim Wilce<\/strong>, anthropology professor, presented a keynote address at the international colloquium Register: Intersections of Language, Context and Communication at Helsinki University on May 25. The show challenges determined athletes to run \u201cthe world\u2019s toughest obstacle course\u201d for a chance to win $500,000. Thompson came in 12th in the Southwest Finals in Venice Beach, Calif., and competed in the national finals on April 20 in Las Vegas. That show will air <a href=\"http:\/\/www.g4tv.com\/anw\/home\/\">on NBC<\/a> in about six weeks.
