Over the course of nine months,\u00a0she\u2019ll\u00a0help\u00a0assess Sweden\u2019s success in regenerating drought- and fire-stricken forests by planting seedlings, with the aim of using those findings to improve regeneration in and around Flagstaff.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cPlanted seedling survival is often lower here than needed in post-fire environments,\u201d Waring said. While at the institute in Sweden, \u201cI hope to learn from their strategies and experiences as well as compare outcomes and drivers.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Waring explained that future forests need a healthy regeneration rate to stay resilient in a rapidly changing climate. Photo: Steven Toya<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Planting seedlings can be costly and time-intensive,\u00a0Waring said.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0collaborating with Swedish forest scientists to understand what conditions make tree seedlings most likely to succeed.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cComparing planting success rates and contributing factors across diverse regions may provide insights key to increasing success in future projects by identifying common challenges and successful strategies,\u201d Waring said. \u201cThe project is focused on building future forest resilience by understanding which factors, particularly those related to climate, contribute to planted seedling success rates following disturbances that remove all trees.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">After assessing the relationship between climate and seedling growing success in Sweden, Waring will compare the variables that\u00a0impact\u00a0seedling establishment in Sweden with those in the American Southwest\u2014two\u00a0different\u00a0places\u00a0with disparate climates.
