After\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0formally inducted, the professor will join a cadre of 3,262 active NAS members who\u00a0represent\u00a0some of the greatest minds in science. Among the NAS ranks are MacArthur fellows, Guggenheim\u00a0fellows\u00a0and about 200 Nobel laureates.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cElection to the National Academy of Sciences is a profound honor, and I am grateful to receive it as part of the NAU community, which has been my scholarly home for 28 years,\u201d Hungate said. \u201cAs a microbial ecologist, I have spent my career studying how communities\u00a0accomplish\u00a0what individuals cannot, and this recognition feels true in exactly that sense. My work has been shaped by the creativity, persistence and insight of students, postdocs, staff and faculty colleagues across the sciences and humanities. At a time when universities, academic freedom and independent inquiry face serious challenges, this honor is also a reminder to defend the people and institutions that make discovery possible.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0proud that it reflects the community of inquiry NAU has built.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hungate came to NAU in 1998 after completing a B.A. in music and English and a B.S. in biology at Stanford University, a Ph.D. at the University of California Berkeley and postdocs at the Smithsonian Institution and Stanford University. Through research on soils, hot\u00a0springs\u00a0and humans, Hungate\u2019s lab examines how ecosystems respond to and shape environmental change. Recently, Hungate and his colleagues have researched the impact of growing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/koch-antibiotic-resistance\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">antibiotic resistance on the public health landscape<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, how soil microbes\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/hungate-friend-foe\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">interact differently as the climate warms<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and the role\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/ecoss-predatory-bacteria\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">predatory bacteria play in where soil nutrients go<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Hungate also serves as the Frances B. McAllister Chair in Community, Culture and the Environment and\u00a0director\u00a0of NAU\u2019s Center for Ecosystem Science and Society.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cBruce Hungate\u2019s election to the National Academy of Sciences is a landmark moment for Northern Arizona University and a powerful affirmation of the\u00a0world<\/span>\u2011<span data-contrast=\"none\">class\u00a0research happening here,\u201d NAU President\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Jos\u00e9 Luis Cruz Rivera<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0said. \u201cHis pioneering work has deepened our understanding of the biological systems that shape our planet, and his recognition by the NAS reflects both the excellence of his scholarship and the impact of his discoveries.
