Faculty-led study abroad programs\u00a0offer innumerable benefits to both faculty and students. For students, it is an opportunity for cultural immersion while getting academic credits,\u00a0and for\u00a0faculty,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a way to\u00a0offer hands-on\u00a0teaching\u00a0and\u00a0mentorship.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0good news all around that\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Center for International Education<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(CIE)\u00a0received\u00a0a\u00a0Gilman Pioneering\u00a0Institution grant\u00a0from the U.S. Department of State.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"NAU<\/a>Education abroad advisors\u00a0<\/span>Amanda Williamson<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Megan Bennett<\/span><\/b>, in collaboration with\u00a0<\/span>Angelina Palumbo<\/span><\/b>, director of the\u00a0Education Abroad\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Nancy Baca<\/span><\/b>, director of the Economic Policy Institute, secured funds for the\u00a0<\/span>NAU in Japan: International Economics and Global Internship<\/span><\/a>\u00a0program led by\u00a0Baca in celebration of\u00a0the\u00a0United States\u2019\u00a0250th anniversary.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis funding is awarded to community colleges and universities to implement initiatives that connect study abroad with career readiness in forward-looking fields that are considered critical to continued U.S. prosperity and advancement,\u201d\u00a0Williamson said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"NAU<\/a>A\u00a0big focus of\u00a0the grant is cross-cultural competency, where the experience abroad\u00a0benefits\u00a0not only\u00a0students going from the U.S. to other countries\u00a0but\u00a0also\u00a0inhabitants\u00a0of those\u00a0other\u00a0countries.\u00a0Some of the funding was applied to this year\u2019s program, which took place during\u00a0spring\u00a0break, and the rest will be used for\u00a0spring\u00a0break\u00a02027.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPartnering with trusted global internship providers, like\u00a0Absolute Internship for this program,\u00a0is critical to delivering meaningful,\u00a0career-ready\u00a0experiences for our students,\u201d Palumbo said. \u201cThe funding received by the Gilman Pioneering Institution\u00a0grant covered the cost of students\u2019 virtual internship placement for the program and will do the same for those participating next year.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with covering the internship fees for students, the funds will\u00a0be used to\u00a0offset\u00a0the\u00a0costs for faculty to run the program\u00a0and for an event to celebrate the country\u2019s anniversary.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe nature of this study abroad program celebrates America’s 250<\/span>th<\/span>\u202fanniversary and history of educational excellence and technological advancement,\u201d Bennett said. \u201cThis grant is aligned with NAU’s mission toward\u00a0global engagement and CIE’s values of innovative study abroad experiences.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0an\u00a0opportunity\u00a0that\u00a0brings together students,\u00a0faculty\u00a0and industry connections locally and nationally.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The America 250\u00a0<\/span>Advancement Prosperity for the Future event is scheduled for\u00a0<\/span>April 28, 3-5 p.m. <\/span>at\u00a0the International Pavilion,<\/span>1450 Knoles Drive<\/span>. Students\u00a0<\/span>who\u00a0participated\u00a0in the program will share\u00a0insights from\u00a0their\u00a0internship\u00a0experiences\u00a0in Japan. After that, they will work\u00a0on a professional development plan and\u00a0participate\u00a0in an advancement workshop.\u00a0All are welcome to attend.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
