Ready to put those\u00a0<\/span>paid community engagement hours<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to use, Lumberjacks? With National Volunteer Month just around the corner,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0the perfect time to (ahem)\u00a0<\/span>spring<\/span><\/i>\u00a0into action.<\/span><\/p>\n

NAU\u2019s Center for Service and Volunteerism (CSV) is hosting its very first Spring into Service Challenge from April 1-22, bringing to campus some fresh volunteer opportunities, community-enriching events and a recognition party with raffle prizes,\u00a0food\u00a0and fun.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Center Director\u00a0<\/span>Erin Kruse\u00a0<\/span><\/b>said Spring into Service has two lofty goals: 1,000 volunteer hours logged and 100 new registered users on the\u00a0<\/span>Axe of Service website<\/span><\/a>. She believes the generous Lumberjack community is more than up to the task, based on\u00a0its\u00a0past generosity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo date this academic year, 470 volunteers have recorded\u00a03,588 hours\u00a0on Axe of Service,\u201d Kruse said. \u201cThey have responded to volunteer needs 2,500 times and supported 59 partner agencies. We invite you to help us hit our April goals and show our Flagstaff community what the Lumberjack spirit is all about!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kruse pointed\u00a0out\u00a0Axe of Service\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0just for NAU employees looking to use their paid volunteer hours\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0also a great resource for students and local community members who want to make a difference. The website helps connect generous people of all ages with local organizations that need\u00a0assistance, allowing users to easily find opportunities that align with their schedules,\u00a0skillsets\u00a0and values. The website\u2019s aim is to lower the barrier of entry for people who want to donate their time but\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know where to start.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople volunteer to feel\u00a0like\u00a0a part of their community and better understand complex issues, to meet people who have shared interests and to build connection, to support a cause or issue they care about, to develop the\u00a0skills that can help them with their careers, to explore possible career paths and so much more,\u201d Kruse said. \u201cAny time someone volunteers, they\u00a0have the opportunity to\u00a0learn and grow personally while supporting a local organization to deliver on their mission, whatever that may be. And whether they volunteer one time or many, that time given makes a difference.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The CSV chose April for the challenge to coincide with National Volunteer Month\u2014and to give students one last opportunity to show some love to Flagstaff before leaving campus for the summer.\u00a0They\u2019ve\u00a0gathered plenty of fun volunteer opportunities for the challenge, including the\u00a0<\/span>Flagstaff Fashion Flip Community Clothing Exchange<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on April 4, a\u00a0<\/span>Special Olympics track and field competition<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on April 7 and a D\u00eda del\u00a0Ni\u00f1os\u00a0event hosted by\u00a0<\/span>Chicanos\u00a0por\u00a0la Causa<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on April 12. Plus, there are several ongoing volunteer opportunities available, including food distribution work at\u00a0<\/span>Flagstaff Family Food Center<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and clothing sorting at\u00a0<\/span>Sharon\u2019s Attic Thrift Store<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
