The Flagstaff Family Food Center is taking over management of\u00a0<\/span>Louie\u2019s Cupboard<\/span><\/a>, the student-focused food pantry on Northern Arizona\u00a0University\u2019s Flagstaff mountain\u00a0campus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The partnership, which was made official after a successful pilot program last semester, will expand food offerings and offer improved access for students both now and in the\u00a0long\u00a0term. The goal is to ensure Louie\u2019s Cupboard can continue to meet students\u2019 needs effectively and compassionately.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are excited for the opportunity to partner with NAU to help meet student needs in the area of food insecurity,\u201d said Ceara\u00a0Chirovsky, vice president of the Flagstaff Family Food Center. \u201cOur mission is to feed our neighbors, many of whom are students,\u00a0faculty\u00a0and staff at NAU. This wonderful community partnership will increase access and build a foundation for more opportunities in the future.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s\u00a0changing?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the pilot program, FFFC contributed fresh produce, frozen\u00a0meals\u00a0and non-perishable food items to the monthly Louie\u2019s Cupboard distribution, which meant more variety.\u00a0Students said they appreciated the expanded options.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The partnership will continue those contributions, which means an increase in quality and quantity of food. The larger supply of food will enable Louie\u2019s Cupboard to serve more students\u00a0now\u00a0and in the future,\u00a0strengthening NAU\u2019s\u00a0goal of\u00a0no Lumberjack going\u00a0hungry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis\u00a0new partnership between NAU\u2019s Louie\u2019s Cupboard and the Flagstaff Family Food Center will significantly increase our ability to mitigate food insecurity for our students,\u201d said Margot Saltonstall<\/strong>, vice president\u00a0for\u00a0Student Affairs at NAU. \u201cLeveraging FFFC\u2019s\u00a0expertise, resources and network will benefit students and help both FFFC and Louie\u2019s Cupboard fulfill their complementary missions.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The partnership\u00a0also\u00a0will position NAU and the FFFC to jointly pursue opportunities to further address the growing concern of food insecurity in our region.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s\u00a0staying the same?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Louie\u2019s Cupboard, which began in 2012 as a\u00a0student\u00a0project\u00a0in a social work program,\u00a0will remain\u00a0housed\u00a0in the Lumberjack CARE Center to make it easily accessible to students.\u00a0The student-led Louie\u2019s Cupboard Club will continue to support the pantry through volunteering and providing guidance and leadership. Since\u00a0the food pantry\u00a0was started by and\u00a0created\u00a0for students, the club will continue to play a significant role in shaping\u00a0its current and future operations.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLouie\u2019s Cupboard has created a safe space for students to receive food and hygiene products free of the judgment or stigma related to food inaccessibility,\u201d said Daniella Quiroz, a junior psychological sciences student and president of the Louie\u2019s Cupboard Club. \u201cWe, as college students, are in such a distinct and rigorous chapter of our lives, and the\u00a0basic necessities\u00a0of nourishment and hygiene should never be a barrier to performing our best.\u00a0Through this collaboration, Louie\u2019s Cupboard will only expand and continue to support our community of students.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
