Digital media have\u00a0great potential\u00a0to lower those barriers, but current publishing structures still tend to follow a paywalled model.\u00a0Sometimes things that are published in\u00a0open access\u00a0are considered &#8220;less scholarly&#8221; or &#8220;less important&#8221; within university promotion and tenure communities.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What does this accomplishment mean to you?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I am part of a team of editor-curator-authors who won the prize for the digital environmental humanities project,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.feralatlas.org\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Feral Atlas: The\u202fMore-than-Human Anthropocene<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Stanford University Press, 2021). This is a\u00a0multimodal\u00a0project, which means\u00a0it includes not just text but images,\u00a0video\u00a0and sound recordings, as well as clickable, interactive web design. In short, it really uses digital space to challenge the traditional form of\u00a0the academic book. While it was a fantastic project to create, we have found that it\u00a0faces precisely\u00a0the kinds of problems of legibility\u00a0in academic circles\u00a0that this prize was created to counteract. I\u00a0have been\u00a0so grateful to see the attention\u00a0the project has\u00a0received in the fields of art and design, as well as from the\u00a0general public\u00a0\u2014 and this award really adds to that by attesting to the scholarly legitimacy of our work.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What is your book about?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The project aims to shed light on all the wild, weird and concerning things that are happening to &#8220;nature&#8221; in this strange period, sometimes referred to as &#8220;the Anthropocene.&#8221; More specifically, it looks at how human-built infrastructures have interacted with non-human entities (both living and non-living) to generate new, undesigned and often uncontrollable effects, which we think of as &#8220;feral.&#8221; Thinking in this way helps us see nature not as something that we act upon with intent, but rather as a set of responsive and unpredictable entities, which are always pushing back against human actions and designs, whether we notice it or not.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Recently, as a follow-on to the digital project, we\u00a0published a print book,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sup.org\/books\/anthropology\/field-guide-patchy-anthropocene\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Field Guide to the Patchy Anthropocene: The New Nature<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Stanford University Press, 2024). Either can be understood as a stand-alone project, but they read well side-by-side!\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tell me a memory you will cherish about the awards ceremony<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For me, the best part was getting to see my co-editors (who are spread across three continents) and having a moment of celebration with them. We finished the project right at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, in mid-2020, which\u00a0tanked\u00a0any plans we might otherwise have made of getting together to do a fun and festive launch for the project.
