Sara Rinfret<\/span><\/b> is a professor and director of the master\u2019s of public administration (MPA) program in the Department of Politics and International Affairs. She was recently elected the president of the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) and as a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA). What brought you to NAU?<\/span><\/b>
\nNorthern Arizona University is more than just a workplace\u2014it’s a return to my roots. As an alumna, coming back to Flagstaff felt like coming full circle. The chance to contribute to a university that shaped my own academic journey, while building programs that connect students to meaningful public service careers, was an opportunity I couldn\u2019t pass up.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is your favorite part of the job?<\/span><\/b>
\nMentoring students and helping them discover their potential is incredibly fulfilling. I also enjoy designing programs that bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world impact, especially when those programs strengthen communities and open doors for students.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tell me about being elected president of NASPAA and what that means to you.<\/span><\/b>
\nBeing elected president of NASPAA is a tremendous honor. It\u2019s a chance to help shape the future of public service education globally. I\u2019m passionate about fostering innovation and collaboration across institutions, and this role allows me to advocate for the next generation of public service leaders.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tell me about being inducted into the National Academy of Public Administration and why it is important.<\/span><\/b>
\nBeing inducted into NAPA is one of the highest honors in our field. It recognizes a career dedicated to public service, leadership and scholarship. More importantly, it connects me with a network of experts working on critical governance challenges\u2014allowing me to contribute to national conversations and solutions that matter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What did you want to be when you grew up?<\/span><\/b>
\nI dreamed of being a nurse, a teacher or a national park interpreter\u2014roles that all reflect a desire to help others, educate and connect with my community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is your favorite childhood memory?<\/span><\/b>
\nEvery summer, my parents, sisters and I would pile into our minivan and travel from Ohio across the country, visiting national parks. Those adventures sparked my love for the West and Arizona, and they remain some of my most cherished memories.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?<\/span><\/b>
\nMy perfect day off includes going for a run in the mountains, reading a good book, swimming and sitting in the sun. It\u2019s a chance to recharge and reconnect with northern Arizona.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are three items on your bucket list?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
