{"id":7595,"date":"2011-10-25T15:17:06","date_gmt":"2011-10-25T22:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=7595"},"modified":"2012-12-07T15:54:27","modified_gmt":"2012-12-07T22:54:27","slug":"haeger-participates-in-presidential-forum-on-student-retention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/haeger-participates-in-presidential-forum-on-student-retention\/","title":{"rendered":"Haeger participates in presidential forum on student retention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Highlighting a number of strategies and initiatives being used at Northern Arizona University, president\u00a0<strong>John Haeger<\/strong>\u00a0participated in a panel discussion Monday at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aascu.org\/meetings\/annual11\/\">annual meeting<\/a>\u00a0of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.<\/p>\n<p>Haeger joined the presidents of two other universities and an education foundation in the \u201cForum on Presidential Leadership in Boosting College Completion.\u201d The forum focused on student retention and completion in an atmosphere of declining state funding and uneven student preparedness.<\/p>\n<p>Noting NAU\u2019s goal to improve its one-year retention rate from 72.4 percent to 85 percent by 2020, Haeger outlined a wide range of actions being taken\u2014some of which are being piloted this semester\u2014that are \u201cexpected to play a pivotal role in student success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the items mentioned by Haeger included the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/first-year-learning-initiative-puts-effort-into-student-success\/\">First-Year Learning Initiative<\/a>, mathematics course redesign and numerous coaching programs and policy strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the topics, linked to an overall conference theme of \u201cLeading Transformational Change,\u201d were the focus of Haeger\u2019s own\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/haeger-calls-for-change-as-performance-funding-nears\/\">forum at NAU<\/a>\u00a0in September. His frequently used phrase \u201cthe new normal\u201d was echoed in the formal invitation to the three-day AASCU conference, which is being held in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Other scheduled panelists appearing with Haeger were Susan A. Cole, president of Montclair State University (N.J.); Jamie P. Merisotis, president and CEO of the Lumina Foundation for\u00a0Education; and Mary Evans Sias, president of Kentucky State University. The forum was moderated by Richard L.
