{"id":75756,"date":"2025-09-15T11:17:34","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T18:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=75756"},"modified":"2025-09-15T11:17:34","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T18:17:34","slug":"return-of-navajo-boy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/return-of-navajo-boy\/","title":{"rendered":"Documentary and discussion to spotlight uranium\u2019s impact on tribal lands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On Sunday, Sept. 21, NAU\u2019s McAllister program in Community, Culture, and the Environment (CC&amp;E) will host a screening of the acclaimed documentary \u201cThe Return of Navajo Boy,\u201d along with two panel discussions connecting the film\u2019s themes to environmental and health challenges that face Indigenous communities in the Southwest today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe Return of Navajo Boy,\u201d first released in 2000, follows the Cly family of Monument Valley as they reunite to place 1950s Navajo Nation film footage back into the hands of the Din\u00e9 and raise awareness of the dire toll that 20th-century uranium mining has taken on the local people and lands. After its release, the film didn\u2019t just win international acclaim\u2014it also triggered a federal investigation into uranium contamination in the Four Corners region, leading to some monetary reparations for those who had contracted lung cancer, kidney disease and other health complications.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Regents\u2019 Professor<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Bruce Hungate<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, chair of CC&amp;E, said with mining operations resuming this year in parts of northern Arizona, the documentary is more relevant than ever.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThis is not just history,\u201d he said. \u201cWith uranium mining and hauling happening again today, these risks are current. This film grounds today\u2019s conversations about environmental justice and Indigenous health the same way it did 25 years ago.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tommy Rock<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-doctoral-student\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">assistant research professor at NAU<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, said he and Hungate dreamt up the screening after they spoke on a panel about the film at Chicago\u2019s Newberry Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cA lot of the conversation was about uranium contamination\u2014people were asking, \u2018What\u2019s up with that? What\u2019s going on?\u2019\u201d Rock said. \u201cBruce and I thought if we had this discussion at NAU, we could go deeper. We could bring together all the leaders who are studying this and talking about this right now.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">After a noon reception and a 1 p.m. film screening, CC&amp;E will host two discussions. The first, a public-facing legacy panel, will explore the film and its continuing impacts, bringing together Rock, film director Jeff Spitz, John Wayne Cly (the eponymous \u201cNavajo Boy\u201d who returned), film narrator Lorenzo Begay, Corey Begay and Breauna Atine. The second panel, also open to the public, will unite tribal leaders, organizers and researchers for a conversation about science, organizing and action related to the modern increase in uranium hauling in the region.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rock said CC&amp;E scheduled the event at midday to ensure members of the Navajo, Hopi, Havasupai, White Mesa Ute and other tribal communities can attend and return home safely the same day. The event will provide a unique chance for them to connect with students, scholars and Flagstaff community members who care about Indigenous health and environmental safety.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWith tribal leaders, students and researchers coming to this event, we have a real opportunity to bridge divides and build community around this issue and make change,\u201d Rock said. \u201cWe have the strength, we have the numbers.
