Kimmerer, best known for her celebrated book \u201cBraiding Sweetgrass,\u201d will speak about Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and the teachings of plants\u2014topics that have inspired her readers and fellow researchers across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Her visit is part of the 17th <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/biennial-conference-of-science-management\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Biennial Conference of Science &amp; Management<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, hosted by NAU\u2019s Center for Adaptable Western Landscapes (CAWL), which brings together scientists, students and resource managers to address the Southwest\u2019s most pressing environmental challenges. Founded in 1998 to support National Park Service managers, the conference now draws more than 300 participants from federal, state, tribal and academic institutions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/biennial-conference-of-science-management\/keynote-speakers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kimmerer\u2019s talk<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> takes place at Prochnow Auditorium from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and it will be followed by a book signing hosted by Brightside Bookstore. The event is free and open to the public.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lara Schmit<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, assistant director of CAWL, said bringing Kimmerer to NAU involved a cross-campus collaborative effort.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt took a village,\u201d Schmit said. \u201cMany NAU units and partners stepped up to make this happen\u2014from the College of Arts and Letters and the Department of English to the dean\u2019s office and several endowed chairs. It was super heartening to see so much excitement and support.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Schmit said that widespread support\u2014including particularly meaningful support from Marcey Olajos via the Olajos-Goslow chairship\u2014speaks to the deep alignment between Kimmerer\u2019s work\u202fand NAU\u2019s commitment to Indigenous communities and ecological restoration.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe work of CAWL focuses on many of the same concerns that interest Robin Wall Kimmerer,\u201d Schmit said. \u201cWe value traditional ecological knowledge and science as tools for healing and restoring damaged landscapes. Many of our scientists work directly with tribal communities, and so do our federal partners. Her message resonates deeply with our mission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kimmerer is known worldwide for bridging Western science and Indigenous ways of knowing, offering a vision of reciprocity with and moral responsibility for the Earth. In addition to the New York Times-bestselling book \u201cBraiding Sweetgrass,\u201d Kimmerer has written numerous critically acclaimed books and essays, including the widely shared \u201cWhat Does the Earth Ask of Us?\u201d\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cShe\u2019s a visionary,\u201d Schmit said. \u201cHer idea that humans can be medicine for the planet\u2014that we can give back in return for all the Earth provides\u2014is transformative.
