The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/education-abroad\/global-citizens-project-scholar\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Global Citizens Project Scholars<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is an NAU Education Abroad program that, in collaboration with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/honors\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Honors College<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/economic-policy-institute\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Economic Policy Institute<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, provides undergraduate students the opportunity to study abroad for just $900.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Abroad.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-74397\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Abroad-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Students of the Global Citizens Project Scholars program posing holding a NAU banner\" width=\"275\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Abroad-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Abroad-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Abroad-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Abroad-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Abroad-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Angelina Palumbo<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, director of education abroad, said that students interested in applying for the program this year will need to take one course online during Spring 2026 to prepare them for their time abroad, where they will learn about global citizenship, rural communities, language and culture and responsible volunteerism and service.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Vietnam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-74399\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Vietnam-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Students of the Global Citizens Project Scholars in Vietnam\" width=\"267\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Vietnam-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Vietnam-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Vietnam.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a>\u201cService to the community is an essential part of this program,\u201d Palumbo said. \u201cStudents go to these countries and participate in projects that help these communities. They help them and learn from them; it\u2019s a reciprocal approach. They need to be prepared to do intense work and submit a final project at the end of their study abroad experience to wrap up the program.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The main difference between the Global Citizens Project and a regular study abroad experience is that the program is almost fully subsidized, providing an opportunity for students who want to travel abroad but can\u2019t afford it. The students selected for the program don\u2019t need to pay for their passports and visas. Even their flight is included in the $900 fee.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Italy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-74401\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Italy-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Students of the Global Citizens Project Scholars outside sitting by a wall of bricks\" width=\"207\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Italy-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Italy-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Italy-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/Global-Citizens-Italy.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a>\u201cIt is designed for students who have never left the United States,\u201d said Palumbo. \u201cEligibility includes being a full time Honors or Honors eligible student, with a minimum 3.3 GPA, demonstrated financial need through Pell Grant eligibility or through another justification and they need to have completed at least two semesters at NAU.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The goal of the Global Citizen Project Scholars, which won the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iie.org\/news\/2024-iie-heiskell-awardees\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">IIE Heiskel Award<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in 2024, is to make international education economically accessible to all students, providing a multidisciplinary learning experience for those who would not have this opportunity otherwise.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cStudying abroad has a great impact on students\u2019 lives,\u201d said Palumbo. \u201cIt is an opportunity to see the world and discover different cultures. Students can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/qualtrics.nau.edu\/jfe\/form\/SV_d6doM6PRDqDwDXg\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">apply<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for the program beginning April 1. Applications will close on Nov. 2 and applicants will be notified if they have been selected by Nov. 17.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis is a great opportunity for students to not only gain a richer understanding of their major and opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom but also help build their resume to enhance their career after they graduate,\u201d Palumbo said. \u201cGetting to help others, make memories and learn about new places is just a bonus.
