According to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Precilla Comisario Cox<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, lead academic advisor and main instructor for the class, it first took shape as a tribal gaming course before expanding in scope to include many forms of Indigenous hospitality.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHospitality is a regular practice within <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indigenous <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cultures<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, whether it be through serving their elders, making sure everyone is fed or planning and participating in family and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">community events,\u201d Comisario Cox said.\u202f \u201cI connected with Indigenous community members, partners within the hospitality industry and students to learn about what is important to Indigenous peoples, what students should learn from this class and how we can make this an applicable class <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">no matter what field they are studying.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/0264_hrm_at_enchantment_20231003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-74353\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/0264_hrm_at_enchantment_20231003-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Student and teacher setting a table\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/0264_hrm_at_enchantment_20231003-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/0264_hrm_at_enchantment_20231003-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/0264_hrm_at_enchantment_20231003-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/0264_hrm_at_enchantment_20231003-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/03\/0264_hrm_at_enchantment_20231003-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>For now, the class focuses on Native American, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Native Alaskan and Native Hawaiian cultures and how they are tightly connected to the hospitality and tourism industry. The first part of the course provides students with knowledge about Indigenous history and culture; the second part focuses on applying that knowledge to different sectors of the industry.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe are going to dive into the culinary side of hospitality and cover Indigenous-owned restaurants and food <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sovereignty and bring in guest speakers to do food demonstrations with our students,\u201d Comisario Cox said. \u201cThen we will go into lodging, spas, tribal gaming, marketing and events and finally into parks and tours. To add firsthand experience to the course, there are plans to take students to visit Twin Arrows Navajo <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Resort and Casino and the spa inside Enchantment Resort in Sedona, which is known for using Native American practices.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">With the assistance of <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Alisse Ali Joseph<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Karen <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Jarratt Snider<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> from the Department of Applied Indigenous Studies, Comisario Cox was able to create the course and now, she is working with <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Emily Manone,<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the general studies program director, to make the class a general studies course.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThis class has been a year and a half in the making,\u201d Comisario Cox said. \u201cThe plan now is to work toward an online version of the course that will benefit our online and statewide students.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This class is the only one of its kind.
