Festival to showcase student films<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In support of student film-making, UTV 62 will be hosting the first Student Films Across America Festival at 7 p.m. Friday, March 28, in the Cline Library Assembly Hall.<\/p>\n

The festival will showcase nationally awarded student short films as well as films produced by NAU students. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

When NAU students channel surf to find that perfect entertainment experience, they may want to consider UTV 62, a station produced specifically with them in mind.<\/p>\n

UTV 62 is a television station on the university’s campus cable system that is entirely student managed and produced.<\/p>\n

From programming and promotion to traffic and production, students gain real-world television industry experience, said\u00a0Paul Helford<\/strong>, professor of electronic media and film and faculty adviser to UTV 62.<\/p>\n

“What I’m most impressed with is that the station’s on-air presence has grown from showing nothing but slides a year ago to a 24\/7 full program schedule targeted to the NAU student viewer,” Helford said.<\/p>\n

Although the student channel has been in existence since spring 2007, it has recently experienced a surge in employees and content.<\/p>\n

“This semester is our kick off as a real station,” said\u00a0Josh Garcia<\/strong>, sophomore electronic media and film major and UTV 62 station manager. “We now have a ton of student-produced content and have grown from five to around 40 employees.”<\/p>\n

The content featured on UTV 62 includes original shows, including\u00a0NAULive!<\/em>, Arizona’s only live student-run newscast. The station also features popular movies and television shows such as\u00a0Lost<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Seinfeld<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The student managers at UTV 62 have several goals for the station, including achieving 24-hour broadcasting of student-produced shows and raising awareness of the station on campus.<\/p>\n

“I hope UTV 62 becomes one of the top student television stations in the nation,” Garcia said. “Where we’re currently at is quite an accomplishment, and I’m confident that our employees will leave UTV 62 ready for the real-world of television.”<\/p>\n
