{"id":73719,"date":"2025-01-17T16:11:33","date_gmt":"2025-01-17T23:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=73719"},"modified":"2025-01-21T08:34:18","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T15:34:18","slug":"raven_chacon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/raven_chacon\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet and greet the first Native American to win the Pulitzer Prize for music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Raven Chacon, the first Native American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize, is coming to NAU to share his experimental sounds. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chacon, who is Din\u00e9, is part of the segment of contemporary composers who work with open spaces, both in the sounds of their music and the spaces where they perform. By using traditional instruments, along with nontraditional objects, he can create melodies that represent the history of the Southwest using experimental sounds.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He\u2019s joining with other Native artists to showcase his unique sounds in a special concert at NAU.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The three-part event at the Kitt School of Music begins with an informal lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 at Kitt Recital Hall. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A meet and greet will take place at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan 31, at the Center for Native American and Indigenous Futures gathering room, followed by the Horizons Concert at Ardrey Memorial Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., which will feature music from Chacon as well as Native artists Michael Begay and<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Sage Bond<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who is an NAU alumna.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bruce Reiprich<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Michael and Karen Kitt endowed professor of composition, said having someone as well renowned as Chacon at NAU will be very special because of his connection to the Native American musical community.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOne of the reasons we are so interested in bringing Raven Chacon to campus, and the other Din\u00e9 composers <\/span>Sage Bond<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and Michael Begay, is that we want to provide successful models for the Din\u00e9 community and the Indigenous community in general,\u201d Reiprich said. \u201cThese are just wonderful people that students can look up to and rub shoulders with and engage in interesting conversations.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to his music, Chacon\u00a0brings voice to Din\u00e9 and other Native American composers and highlights their culture and community. He is not only a musician, but a mentor and a talented artist whose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=567ab18d067741e3&amp;rlz=1C1GCEB_enUS1144US1144&amp;q=video+of+raven+chacon+music&amp;spell=1&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjRr-C_2P2KAxVSIUQIHeWRCFgQBSgAegQIDRAB&amp;biw=1280&amp;bih=551&amp;dpr=1.5#fpstate=ive&amp;vld=cid:03521df4,vid:Yc0Itg2tmj8,st:0\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">visual and sonic artwork<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has been exhibited throughout the United States and around the world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chacon, Begay and Bond will be part of the Ensemble Flageolet rehearsals for the Horizons Concert to show the performers the best way to place the instruments in that specific space to perform their music.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">NAU\u2019s professional contemporary music Ensemble Flageolet is composed of faculty, guest performers from other parts of the country and advanced students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt is a way of bringing our students into the world of contemporary music and meeting our guest composers and working with them directly,\u201d Reiprich said. \u201cThey will come to rehearsals and make suggestions as to how best we can perform and interpret their music. It will be a rewarding experience that extends their education far beyond what happens in the classroom.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All three events are free and open to the public.
