Each year, NAU-Yuma social work students get up just as early to show support and appreciation for the workers with the Dia del Campesino, or Day of the Farmworker, health and resource fair.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_5250.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-73609\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_5250.jpeg\" alt=\"Farmworkers line up beside the NAU booth at the 30th Dia del Campesino resource fair.\" width=\"379\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a>The 30th annual fair took place on Dec. 6 from midnight to 6 a.m. next to the border crossing in San Luis, Arizona. Farmworkers are unable to take time off work to care for their physical and emotional needs. So, one day each year, students join community agencies to bring them resources, essential products and comfort items.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cFarmworkers are responsible for producing over 90 percent of the nation\u2019s lettuce from our geographical region during winter months,\u201d said <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kara Ahearn<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an assistant clinical professor for the Department of Social Work at NAU-Yuma. \u201cHowever, they remain invisible. They work long hours, often without the appropriate equipment and comfort items needed to maintain their health and safety, and they are very vulnerable to exploitation.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This year, more than 20 social work students participated in the event. The group collected donations from local businesses, a GoFundMe account and a raffle. Farmworkers sipped warm champurrado, a thick chocolate Mexican drink, and ate fresh food as they visited informational booths staffed by immigration, education and health and wellness organizations.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">People dressed in holiday costumes and attire also danced to traditional Mexican music.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt felt welcoming,\u201d said participating NAU-Yuma student <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Anthony Crocker<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cThere was a definite sense of belonging.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">NAU-Yuma students gathered hands-on experience in micro- and macro-level social work by meeting their clients where they were and providing essential items to improve their quality of life, Ahearn said.
