{"id":73058,"date":"2024-09-30T14:27:41","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T21:27:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=73058"},"modified":"2024-10-28T11:07:14","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T18:07:14","slug":"outober-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/outober-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate LGBTQ+ Lumberjacks this OUTober\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You\u2019ve heard of Pride Month in June\u2014but did you know that October is another significant month for the LGBTQ+ community?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Forty-five years ago on Oct. 14, an estimated 100,000 people took part in the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, urging lawmakers to pass civil rights legislation that would protect gay, transgender and other queer community members from discrimination. And since 1988, LGBTQ+ people and their allies have celebrated National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11, sharing their personal coming-out stories and raising awareness of the rich, diverse LGTBQ+ population.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s why, in October, NAU celebrates its own LGBTQ+ family with OUTober\u2014a <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/inclusion\/outober\/\">series of celebrations and conversations<\/a> that shine a spotlight on the resilience and vibrancy of gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and other queer members of the Lumberjack community.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Souksavanh Keovorabouth<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an assistant professor of women and gender studies and applied Indigenous studies, OUTtober isn\u2019t just a time for recognition\u2014it\u2019s also a time for reclamation. Keovorabouth is Din\u00e9, second-generation Laotian, queer, trans and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starobserver.com.au\/opinion\/what-is-the-2s-in-lgbtq2s\/214881\">Two-Spirit<\/a>, a distinctive way of being that has existed in North American Indigenous life for many generations. Dedicating time to celebrate all LGBTQ+ people, they said, gives Two-Spirit people like them a chance to highlight that they have always been here and will persist.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhat stands out about NAU\u2019s LGBTQIA2S+ community is its incredible resiliency, determination and ability to occupy spaces that were never originally meant for us,\u201d Keovorabouth said. \u201cIt is vital for NAU to celebrate and recognize its LGBTQIA2S+ community because we represent a diverse array of experiences and identities that enrich the university culture.
