{"id":72999,"date":"2024-09-20T10:40:28","date_gmt":"2024-09-20T17:40:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=72999"},"modified":"2024-09-20T10:40:42","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T17:40:42","slug":"c3-hsi-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/c3-hsi-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU secures $3M HSI grant to increase student success in and out of the classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Arizona University is launching a five-year program called <em>Comunidad, Cultura y Conexi\u00f3n (C<sup>3<\/sup>): Enhancing Institutional Effectiveness with Hispanic Students at NAU<\/em> that will help all students gain the skills needed to be successful after college.<\/p>\n<p>With $3 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education and under the leadership of <strong>Luis Fernandez<\/strong>, chair of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, and <strong>Angelina Castagno<\/strong>, chair of the Department of Educational Leadership, the C<sup>3<\/sup> initiative has four primary areas of focus:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Develop the C<sup>3<\/sup> Scholars, a cohort of freshmen and sophomores who will have shared coursework and comprehensive support services to increase access and quality of educational support in areas of academics, community building, finances and well-being<\/li>\n<li>Improve faculty and staff capacity for supporting students through participation in a yearlong Community of Practice (C<sup>3<\/sup> CoP) focusing on inclusive and identity-positive practices<\/li>\n<li>Improve the coordination and alignment of NAU\u2019s social, mental health, academic and financial support services to better meet student needs through development of an advisory and review group (C<sup>3<\/sup> Advisory Council) focused on aligning and strengthening institutional policies and procedures<\/li>\n<li>Improve processes for institutional data sharing in areas of persistence, retention, completion, student experience surveys and post-college outcomes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This initiative will build on many programs already available to NAU students, including peer mentoring, the First Year Seminar, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/first-gen\/first-scholars\/\">First Scholars program<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/first-gen\/star\/\">STAR program<\/a> and many others available to NAU students.<\/p>\n<p>While this funding focuses on Hispanic students, C<sup>3<\/sup> also benefits first-generation students and contributes to the success of all students at NAU through enhanced institutional collaborations and programming.
