Yet for most of these conditions, treatments and cures remain elusive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This summer, three NAU students were driven to change that.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Avery Carter<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sophia Justice<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alexandra Wicker<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014all Lumberjack Scholarship recipients in NAU\u2019s Honors College\u2014were selected to participate in a competitive internship program at the Barrow Neurological Institute. As the world\u2019s largest neurological disease treatment and research hub, Barrow attracts interns from throughout the country and the globe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The three Lumberjacks had the opportunity to work alongside some of the top neurological scholars in the world on research that could help transform the lives of those who have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS) and other diseases.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72893\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72893\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/barrow_02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72893\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/barrow_02-1024x814.jpg\" alt=\"Alexandra Wicker and Sophia Justice standing in front of the Ivy Brain Tumor Center at the Barrow Neurological Institute\" width=\"500\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/09\/barrow_02-1024x814.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/09\/barrow_02-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/09\/barrow_02-768x611.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/09\/barrow_02.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alexandra Wicker, left, and Sophia Justice, right, were two of three NAU students to land competitive internships at the Barrow Neurological Institute.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s always been Wicker\u2019s goal to become a neurologist and help solve the puzzle of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, which affects nearly 7 million Americans.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIts social and economic burden is immense, yet it has been very difficult to treat to date,\u201d Wicker said.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The rising senior worked with Dr. Marwan Sabbagh, a neurologist at Barrow, on a journal article that provides an overview of the last 20 years in research on monoclonal antibodies, which have been used in experimental treatment for Alzheimer\u2019s. The article, coming soon in the journal Neurology and Therapy, summarizes each monoclonal antibody development this century and what it has taught us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis internship allowed me to learn more about the disorder while also contributing to extremely meaningful research,\u201d Wicker said. \u201cNot only will I be walking away from this experience with another publication, but I\u2019ve been able to confirm that my current career aspirations are what\u2019s right for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In a neighboring lab, rising senior Justice worked with translational neuroscientist Claudia Cantoni on a project that aims to find effective preventative measures for MS.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMy lab focuses on lifestyle and environmental risk factors in MS,\u201d Justice said. \u201cMy specific project was investigating the combined neuroprotective effects of intermittent fasting and supplementation with dietary spermidine\u201d\u2014a chemical compound found in chickpeas, rice bran and other foods that\u2019s thought to delay age-related disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Justice said the internship gave her a unique opportunity to witness two sides of neuroscience: the clinical side and the research side.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMy time at Barrow gave me the knowledge and tools I need to succeed as I continue my education and work toward my ultimate goal of becoming a neurologist,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72898\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72898\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240731-BNI-Neuro-Education-Summer-Internship-Program-0073-PRINT-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72898\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240731-BNI-Neuro-Education-Summer-Internship-Program-0073-PRINT-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Sophia Justice wearing a lab coat and sitting at a computer\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/09\/20240731-BNI-Neuro-Education-Summer-Internship-Program-0073-PRINT-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/09\/20240731-BNI-Neuro-Education-Summer-Internship-Program-0073-PRINT-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/09\/20240731-BNI-Neuro-Education-Summer-Internship-Program-0073-PRINT-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/09\/20240731-BNI-Neuro-Education-Summer-Internship-Program-0073-PRINT-1.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72898\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rising senior Sophia Justice worked with translational neuroscientist Claudia Cantoni on a project that aims to find effective preventative measures for MS.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meanwhile, Carter (pictured at top), a rising junior who has clinical experience, got a rare peek into the research side of things during her time at Barrow. She worked with translational neuroscientist Rita Sattler on scholarship that investigates the contribution of a specific support cell in the central nervous system to two neurodegenerative diseases: ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI was absolutely fascinated by the research being conducted in Rita Sattler\u2019s lab on ALS\/FTD, and I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of,\u201d Carter said. \u201cOnce I began meeting with people from her lab, this sealed the deal.
