{"id":72431,"date":"2024-06-04T14:55:11","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T21:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=72431"},"modified":"2024-06-04T14:55:22","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T21:55:22","slug":"hispanic-latine-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/hispanic-latine-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU pilots first Hispanic\/Latine Youth Media Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This weekend, the School of Communication hosted its first Hispanic\/Latine Youth Media Workshop, a free two-day seminar for Hispanic and Latine high school students looking to engage with and explore the film and visual communication fields. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">NAU faculty members led 13 Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) students in hands-on virtual reality, stop motion and game design demonstrations designed to introduce them to media production and the college experience. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The workshop was open to high school students who filled out a digital application, which required a 100- to 200-word written essay or a two- to three-minute video essay for consideration.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThese students are doing something that they may have never thought they were capable of doing,\u201d said <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Paul Helford<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a teaching professor in the School of Communication and the department\u2019s workshop director. \u201cThis has the potential to be a life-changing experience.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/HLYMW_logo_color.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72442 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/HLYMW_logo_color.png\" alt=\"Hispanic\/Latine Youth Media Workshop logo\" width=\"359\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/06\/HLYMW_logo_color.png 2100w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/06\/HLYMW_logo_color-300x195.png 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/06\/HLYMW_logo_color-1024x664.png 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/06\/HLYMW_logo_color-768x498.png 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/06\/HLYMW_logo_color-1536x996.png 1536w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/06\/HLYMW_logo_color-2048x1328.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/a>With years of workshop success under his belt, Helford began developing the Hispanic\/Latine Youth Media Workshop last year after professor <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rima Brusi<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> visited the 2023 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/communication\/indigenousyouthmediaworkshop\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indigenous Youth Media Workshop<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Hoping to create a similar opportunity for Hispanic and Latine youth, Brusi helped the School of Communication secure funding through the Office of the President to build this year\u2019s weekend-long training experience. \u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In November, the team reached out to Hispanic and Latine faculty within NAU and FUSD to develop workshop goals, recruit instructors and identify potential projects for incoming students, eventually deciding to branch out to visual communication topics outside of broadcast journalism. \u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Patricia Aline Murphey<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, director of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/communication\/visual-design-lab\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">VisualDESIGNLab<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, also worked with workshop leaders to develop a one-of-a-kind pink and gold floral event logo to be displayed on promotional materials and T-shirts and stickers that went to every involved student and faculty member. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI hope these students want to come back and tell their classmates how cool it is,\u201d Helford said. \u201cTo me, the most special thing about this workshop and the Indigenous workshop is that they\u2019re free to the participants. The workshops not only helped demystify working in the arts but also allowed him to promote the college experience for the next generation of visual communication students. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt was really cool to work with kids who are mostly first-generation college kids like me and who are interested in this college,\u201d he said. \u201cThey may not even be interested in film, but they are getting to try it out while meeting new people and faculty. They\u2019re getting all those connections right off the bat, so they get a huge step up.
