{"id":72332,"date":"2024-05-07T16:23:52","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T23:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=72332"},"modified":"2024-05-09T10:21:52","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T17:21:52","slug":"claudia-iglesias-buck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/claudia-iglesias-buck\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Claudia Iglesias-Buck: How a world of adventures led nursing student to NAU\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On her first day of college, 18-year-old <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Claudia Iglesias-Buck<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> knew what she wanted to do with her life.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On graduation day, the 22-year-old had no idea what she wanted to do next.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It wasn\u2019t the journey she anticipated on that long-ago first day of school, but for Iglesias-Buck, the circuitous path that has led to her life today\u2014she\u2019s graduating with a second bachelor\u2019s degree in nursing from the College of Health and Human Services and preparing to work in emergency medicine at a level one trauma center\u2014was exactly what she needed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72336\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72336\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-72336\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCPeaceCorps.jpg\" alt=\"Iglesias-Buck with a Senegalese woman while she was in the Peace Corps.\" width=\"275\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCPeaceCorps.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCPeaceCorps-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCPeaceCorps-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCPeaceCorps-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCPeaceCorps-1536x1152.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Iglesias-Buck with a Senegalese woman while in the Peace Corps.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI spent the decade after college living by the beach in San Diego; backpacking through Southeast Asia, Central and South America and Spain; completing a certification in birthwork as a doula and another 200-hour certification as a vinyasa yoga teacher; working in behavioral therapy and case management; bartending; and volunteering with the Peace Corps in Senegal,\u201d Iglesias-Buck said. \u201cEach of these experiences showed me that I wanted a career that gave back to my community, provided me a flexible schedule and solid work-life balance and integrated my love of working with people in a fast-paced environment.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Perfect, in other words, for nursing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Preparing for nursing before she knew she wanted to be a nurse<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Iglesias-Buck\u2019s first bachelor\u2019s degree is in psychology; she planned to be a therapist. She fell in love and got married. She learned to juggle different tasks and work with all sorts of people.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the decade between finishing college and deciding to go back to college, one thing Iglesias-Buck routinely went back to was bartending. She found herself regularly \u201cwrangling\u201d rowdy customers, talking to people through their difficult times, adapting to various situations and staying on her feet even when she was tired. Buck said when she got into nursing, she discovered many parallels between the skills of a bartender and a nurse.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe service industry taught me how to juggle multiple tasks while simultaneously developing genuine connections with new people, how to work quickly and thoroughly under pressure, how to prioritize tasks and how to show up to work with a positive attitude regardless of what else may be happening in my life,\u201d Iglesias-Buck said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Discovering NAU\u2019s accelerated BSN program<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When Iglesias-Buck decided she wanted to be a nurse, she started taking prerequisites and looking around at nursing schools near her California home. Then a friend in NAU\u2019s speech language pathology master\u2019s program expressed how much she loved her experience as a student. Her interest piqued, Iglesias-Buck looked into NAU and found the accelerated BSN , a 12-month program designed for students who already have bachelor\u2019s degrees in other fields. NAU was able to expand those programs in 2023 and offer full scholarships after receiving a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nursing-grant\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">$6.4 million grant from the State of Arizona<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Iglesias-Buck was waitlisted for the Flagstaff cohort, but an advisor reached out later to ask if she was interested in joining the first North Valley cohort. Working in Phoenix, though not her first choice, allowed for unparalleled opportunities to work with a variety of practitioners and different medical locations. When Iglesias-Buck wasn\u2019t in class or at a healthcare facility or working, she was studying dense, complicated subjects like pathophysiological processes and nursing interventions or memorizing hundreds of medications with their drug class, side effects and contraindications. She had exams every week or two. On top of all that, she worked bartending shifts to make ends meet.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She did it all, not only going to class but actively participating in lengthy lectures. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beverly Rader<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an assistant clinical professor in the accelerated BSN program, said Iglegias-Buck demonstrated a passion for learning; she frequently asked questions and shared examples from her clinical work. In a field where no two classes or two patients are the same, Iglesias-Buck was just able to adapt. She also has a smile that helps her connect with patients.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhat I appreciated most about Claudia was her flexibility with last-minute changes in the program without complaining,\u201d she said. \u201cHer ability to accept negative feedback also demonstrated a high level of emotional intelligence, and I am confident that she will be an excellent and caring registered nurse.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-72339\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCHeadshot-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Claudia Iglesias-Buck headshot in Sedona\" width=\"227\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCHeadshot-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCHeadshot-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCHeadshot-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/05\/IglesiasBuckCHeadshot-1536x2048.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now that she\u2019s graduating, Iglesias-Buck can look back and see that the difficulty of this work is what helped her to excel. It was hard every day, but she did it all, earning good grades, making the Dean\u2019s List and feeling ready to be a nurse.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThough the pace of this program is grueling, it is also very empowering,\u201d Iglesias-Buck said. \u201cAccelerated BSN programs are not for every student, but they are a great option for students like me who are returning to school seeking a new career after having spent a few years in the workforce.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After commencement, Iglesias-Buck will work in the emergency department at Flagstaff Medical Center, <span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW75893675 BCX8\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW75893675 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart CommentHighlightPipeRestV2 CommentHighlightRest SCXW75893675 BCX8\">where s<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW75893675 BCX8\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW75893675 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW75893675 BCX8\">he will put all her
