But have you ever wondered exactly where that money goes?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Every green fee gets pooled together in a pot of money called the Green Fund that is used to support sustainability initiatives around the Flagstaff mountain campus. The students evaluate proposed projects to determine whether they fall under the Green Fund\u2019s jurisdiction, whether they are likely to have a significant impact on campus or the community and whether they align with the university\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/green-nau\/nau-climate-action-plan\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Climate Action Plan<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (CAP)\u2014part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/president\/strategic-plan\/#dynamic-link-5\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Elevating Excellence strategic priority to sustainably steward resources<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For third year student <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lindsay Mauss<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the opportunity to work as the Green Fund\u2019s public relations specialist was a perfect blend of her passions and her skills.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019ve always felt passionate about sustainability, and I was lucky to find a spot in the sustainability world where I was welcome as a communications major.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mauss said that she has learned how to engage with people on a topic that can produce a lot of dread or negative reactions through her work at the Green Fund.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSo many people already feel so pessimistic about climate change,\u201d she said \u201cI learned that forming relationships with people and engaging with them in a positive way helps instill a feeling of confidence and power in them.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s exactly that engagement with the campus community that makes the Green Fund work. All the projects the committee supports are brought to them by university students, faculty or staff members.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How do I get involved with the Green Fund?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fourth year student <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Grace Carr<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the committee\u2019s impact analyst, said she was drawn to the Green Fund for its ability to amplify student voices and acknowledge the positive influence they can have on the community by funding their sustainability projects and research.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBy lowering the barriers to getting involved in green efforts on campus, we can help give students, staff and faculty the opportunity to reclaim their power in the face of a mounting environmental dilemma,\u201d Carr said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students who wish to see their ideas implemented do not need to work for the Green Fund. Any member of the NAU community\u2014including faculty and staff\u2014can submit their project idea to the Green Fund for consideration.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Mauss, that\u2019s the most important thing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAll students can submit proposals and utilize the fee that they\u2019re paying every semester. It doesn\u2019t matter if they study sustainability or not\u2014everyone can get involved.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The process of submitting to the Green Fund begins with an idea summary\u2014a brief initial pitch that allows the committee to do a quick check to see if the idea is something they are in a position to fund before the applicant develops a full proposal. I want to encourage anyone affiliated with NAU to consider how they can apply their unique skills, especially those in the arts and humanities, to furthering green causes on campus.
