Around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nena.org\/page\/911statistics\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">240 million<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 9-1-1 calls are made each year, and this week recognizes those who play the crucial role of answering and responding to them.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Senior NAUPD dispatcher <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jennifer Hood<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s main responsibility is to answer emergency phone calls and dispatch the proper response. She also answers community questions and carries out administrative duties for the department.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She describes her office as a \u201ccatch-all\u201d for any question students have, as most callers are in a transitional stage of life and just entering independence.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur role as dispatchers is critical and difficult,\u201d Hood said. \u201cNormally, as we run with just one person in here. We\u2019re handling everything: All the radio traffic, all the phone calls, all the walk-ins, all the alarms going off, everything that\u2019s happening at the same time, one person is dealing with.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hood works 12-hour shifts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. She typically starts her day by checking the police blotter and catching up on any activity that occurred when she was off duty.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She spends the rest of her shift answering calls, keeping track of fire alarm tests and assisting student workers with traffic control.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72043\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72043\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-72043\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_0220.jpg\" alt=\"Dispatcher Jennifer Hood sitting at her computer.\" width=\"450\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/04\/IMG_0220.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/04\/IMG_0220-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/04\/IMG_0220-768x535.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Jennifer Hood. Hood said an incident that stood out to her was when a student\u2019s father suffered cardiac arrest during move-in weekend.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Paramedics arrived and took the man to the hospital within minutes because of Hood\u2019s coordination in dispatching.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe sense of purpose, the sense of knowing exactly what I needed to do for this person to give them the best shot at surviving, you just snap into a different focus and you\u2019re like this is it, okay, and you perform at your best when life is at stake,\u201d Hood said. \u201cKnowing that when life is on the line, we are here<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I am here<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and we make a huge difference is what matters to me and is why I do this.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before becoming a dispatcher, Hood was a National Park Service ranger. She said she transitioned into her NAUPD position easily because of her previous experience handling emergencies. Her role as a ranger gave her the training and knowledge necessary for communicating with first responders.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On calls, Hood said dispatchers ask questions abruptly, which sometimes causes students to think they are not being listened to. She explained that she does listen to callers, but it is essential for her job to gain all necessary information about a situation as quickly as possible.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe are trying to be professional, efficient, timely and caring and carry out our job in the highest exceptional capacity for them,\u201d Hood said. \u201cIt&#8217;s in those times of intense stress and trauma that your brain just kind of focuses on certain things and maybe people can&#8217;t say exactly what&#8217;s going on, so we launch into questions to figure out what we need to know.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jhordyn Bigelow<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> initially joined NAUPD as a student worker, then transitioned to a full-time dispatcher position after graduating.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When Bigelow was a freshman, she frequently used NAUPD\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/police-department\/safety-escorts\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Safe Walk<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">program to request an escort across sides of campus. She said she applied for a role with NAUPD partially because of this service<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the safety it provides.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen I applied for this job and I actually started working, I was like, \u2018Wow, I didn&#8217;t know how much they did,\u2019\u201d Bigelow said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bigelow described an instance in which a student\u2019s parent called for help acquiring an enrollment verification form. While it was not her responsibility, she assisted them anyway because she remembered struggling with the same task as a student.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think what students should know is that we\u2019re always there for them,\u201d Bigelow said. \u201cWe\u2019re always here, 24\/7. It\u2019s our job.
