At NAU, two initiatives are in place to redistribute food that would otherwise be discarded: the Food Recovery Network and Louie\u2019s Leftovers, both aiming to make a positive impact in the community and on campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Campus food for community kitchens and shelters<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Four days of the week, a small group of volunteers gathers at the Hot Spot in the University Union. There, kitchen staff indicate which unused food items are safe to recover, and the volunteers\u00a0collect, weigh and pack those items for transport. NAU\u2019s chapter of FRN, established 10 years ago, operates four recoveries each week and in 2023 recovered more than 444,990 pounds of food.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere is perfectly usable food thrown into the trash every day, so we want to intervene, even in just a small way,\u201d said <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cory Tompkins<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an Honors College student majoring in environmental and sustainability studies. Beyond being motivated to divert waste, Tompkins said, the club\u2019s members are \u201cpassionate about supporting local nonprofit organizations\u201d and making an impact at the community level.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to near-daily food recovery on campus, FRN participates in larger initiatives, including one project that recovered food from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-food-recovery-network-helps-tackle-food-waste-and-hunger-at-super-bowl\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the players\u2019 tailgate event in Glendale leading up to the 2023 Super Bowl<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. There, FRN was able to redirect 2,901 pounds of landfill-bound food to those in need.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fran Alvarado<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, sustainability coordinator for campus dining, said the club is always in need of volunteers and is looking to expand its efforts to additional campus dining locations. Food recovery volunteers operate in groups of two to three people\u2014one or two recovering food and one driving to the partner location. Volunteers must commit to a 45-minute shift beginning at 2 p.m. and wear closed-toed shoes, long-sleeved shirts and long pants. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/signup.com\/client\/invitation2\/secure\/1977938980103\/false#\/invitation\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NAU community members can sign up for volunteer shifts online.<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Those who would like to learn more or get involved in other ways can <\/span><a href=\"mailto:Francisca.Alvarado@sodexo.com\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">contact Alvarado<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> directly.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Catered food for campus residents<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For students on campus, there is another way to help redirect leftover food, and that\u2019s by eating it!\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/experience-design\/louies-leftovers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Louie\u2019s Leftovers<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> program started in 2018 as an additional way to help close the loop on food waste. Through this program, students can sign up to receive notifications on the NAU<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">go<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> app about leftover food at catered campus events. The window of availability is typically short, but students who are in the right place at the right time can take advantage of this opportunity for a free meal.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To sign up for notifications, students must have the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/naugo\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NAU<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">go<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> app on their phones. They can then <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/63\/Opt-In-to-Louies-Leftovers-1.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">opt-in to notifications<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> via the messages section of the app. Notifications will include both the location of the food and how long it will be available.
