{"id":71810,"date":"2024-03-26T16:20:38","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T23:20:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=71810"},"modified":"2024-03-27T15:04:22","modified_gmt":"2024-03-27T22:04:22","slug":"junia-mcalister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/junia-mcalister\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the trailblazing woman who founded NAU\u2019s chemistry department"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Junia McAlister<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was born in 1899\u2014the same year the Northern Arizona Normal School opened its doors in Flagstaff. Two years later, four women made up the first graduating class.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Decades later, \u201cMiss Mac\u201d came to what is now Northern Arizona University to teach chemistry. What she ended up doing was creating the chemistry department, carrying it on her shoulders for more than a decade and building a foundation of women in science at NAU. Her pioneering legacy continues in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry; NAU\u2019s chemistry research faculty has always had a significantly higher percentage of women than the average. Right now it&#8217;s about 44%; in 2005-06, when a <a href=\"https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/articles\/83\/i44\/Women-Faculty-Make-Little-Progress.html%22\">report showed that 13% of chemistry faculty were women<\/a>, NAU&#8217;s department was 31% female.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Leaders say it\u2019s the result of a concerted effort to build a welcoming, supportive department for people of all backgrounds, one built on the legacy of a woman who started as the only woman in the room and worked to ensure it didn\u2019t stay that way.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71815\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71815\" style=\"width: 383px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-71815\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/NAU_BROWDER_100.jpg\" alt=\"Cindy Browder in a lab looking at liquid in a beaker.\" width=\"383\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/03\/NAU_BROWDER_100.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/03\/NAU_BROWDER_100-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/03\/NAU_BROWDER_100-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Cindy Browder<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cJunia McAlister was an absolute trailblazer,\u201d said chemistry professor <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cindy Browder<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who called NAU\u2019s gender inclusivity unmatched. \u201cNot only did Miss Mac teach all the sub-disciplines of chemistry herself\u2014most faculty teach in one or two areas of chemistry and do not have the expertise to be effective instructors in all five\u2014but she did so at a time when women were rare in science, especially in chemistry. I like to think that Miss Mac\u2019s influence has enabled this department to support women, even decades after her retirement.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/womens-history-month\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Learn more about other trailblazing women <\/span>in the community.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A groundbreaking career<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When McAlister came to Flagstaff in 1943 to teach in the wartime Navy V-12 program, she had two degrees in chemistry and had done advanced work and taught at several universities. She found her home here. In 1945, McAlister became the first chemistry professor at the Arizona State Teachers College, which later that year became the Arizona State College at Flagstaff. She was in fact the only chemistry professor for 11 years and taught up to seven different chemistry classes\u2014a teaching load of more than 25 hours a week. By the time McAlister retired in 1968, there were 12 faculty in the Department of Chemistry, officially founded in 1965. Retired professor <strong>Don Gilbert<\/strong> was one of those new faculty members.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI always said, \u2018Junia broke me in,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cShe showed me the ropes in 1965 when I started at Arizona State College. I remember her as a very gracious lady with a wry sense of humor. At one time during World War II, she was THE chemistry department!\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">McAlister was well-decorated in her time at NAU. She was named Woman of the Day in 1956 during the Associated Women Students\u2019 Women\u2019s Day activities, and in 1967 the Alumni Association presented her with the Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award. In 1968, the year she retired, she received the Distinguished Teacher Award of the Central Arizona Section of the American Chemical Society, an award presented to her by Nobel Prize laureate Arthur Kornberg. She was a member of ACS and several honor societies for decades.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She\u2019s also the namesake of an award still given at NAU today. The Junia McAlister Award, established in 1973, recognizes one outstanding chemistry graduate each year; their names are listed on a series of plaques in the Science and Health building.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe read portions of Junia\u2019s biography at our awards ceremony when presenting the Junia McAlister Award,\u201d Cruickshank said. \u201cI usually get a bit choked up when reading the biography of such a wonderful person, teacher and \u2018founder\u2019 of our department.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50668\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50668\" style=\"width: 393px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-50668\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/jani_ingram_lab_img_9082_29438673902_o.jpg\" alt=\"Jani Ingram working in lab\" width=\"393\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2018\/03\/jani_ingram_lab_img_9082_29438673902_o.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2018\/03\/jani_ingram_lab_img_9082_29438673902_o-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2018\/03\/jani_ingram_lab_img_9082_29438673902_o-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2018\/03\/jani_ingram_lab_img_9082_29438673902_o-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Jani Ingram and student Andee Lister.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018The only woman in the room\u2019<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That piece of her legacy has continued as well. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Jani Ingram<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Regents\u2019 professor of chemistry and biochemistry, said the efforts the department makes to be welcoming\u2014such as supporting each other\u2019s professional activities and work\/life balance\u2014helps to recruit all new faculty.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cHaving a number of women in a diverse number of roles in the department such as teaching, research and service, is really important in recruitment of new faculty who are women,\u201d she said. \u201cWe do not focus on recruiting women faculty, but the environment is positive for women in our department, so it is attractive for candidates. It is important that our department was founded on the work of Junia McAlister as she was definitely a leader in a time when there were few women in chemistry.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The critical mass of women and the welcoming, supportive department attracted Browder to NAU, as it did many others through the years.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cPrior to coming to NAU in 2007, I was frequently the only woman in the room,\u201d she said. \u201cI was the only female faculty member in my prior position in the Chemistry &amp; Biochemistry department at Fort Lewis College, which was a very common situation for women chemists to be in. I\u2019ve never had a female chemistry professor; I was one of two women in the group where I did my postdoctoral training (of 22 graduate students and postdocs); and I was one of two women in the group where I did my Ph.D. (of 12 graduate students).
