{"id":71570,"date":"2024-03-04T09:08:10","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T16:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=71570"},"modified":"2024-03-04T09:08:10","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T16:08:10","slug":"smartfan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/smartfan\/","title":{"rendered":"Computer science students at NAU compete for a &#8216;cool&#8217; prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What if, instead of fighting the environment around us, we harnessed it to create a low-cost, accessible tool that made our living spaces more comfortable? <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A team of computer science students from NAU is working on a project that will do exactly that.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Project SmartFan is one of five finalists in the 10X Clean Cooling Student Competition, which offers a $100,000 prize to one winning team for prototyping their product and $50,000 to the project\u2019s community partner\u2014in SmartFan\u2019s case, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Arizona\u2014for implementation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The competition is designed to \u201cinspire the development and implementation of new and innovative solutions\u201d that address the impacts of extreme heat in states along the I-10 corridor. In regions like the desert Southwest, where temperatures can fluctuate dramatically between night and day, SmartFan will be able to leverage cooler nights to bring indoor temperatures down and keep houses from overheating during the day. Especially in areas where air conditioners are not standard in many structures, systems like this one can make a big difference.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alexander Shenkin<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aculty lead of the team and assistant research professor in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems described SmartFan as a system that \u201cessentially mimics peoples\u2019 behavior of opening or closing windows to cool or heat their homes at different times of day,\u201d but in a \u201csmarter,\u201d more efficient way. Because SmartFan uses very little energy to keep living spaces as cool as possible in warm seasons and as warm as possible in cool seasons, it \u201creduces bills for those who have HVAC systems, improves life for those who don\u2019t, and all the while reduces the massive carbon footprint of HVAC systems worldwide,\u201d Shenkin said. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ten Across and Climateworks Clean Cooling Collaborative, the competition\u2019s sponsors, highlight a need for scalability in effective climate solutions: \u201cCurrent cooling technologies are major contributors to climate change, making it imperative that alternative, affordable and scalable solutions be developed to meet the needs of a hotter planet.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is a necessity the SmartFan team emphasized in their project description, noting that their \u201csimple yet smart\u201d solution scales easily and affordably. \u201cI believe that Project SmartFan, more than anything else, represents a major leveraging of current technology in re-addressing old solutions,\u201d said <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brandon Mack<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the student team lead for the project. \u201cThe SmartFan system itself is simple conceptually; however, it is designed to integrate into any household with ease, reducing the strain on current interior climatization tools or altogether replacing cooling systems.
