How can <\/span>theater practice<\/span><\/a> transform students into better medical providers? How does creative writing become the catalyst for vibrant community relationships? How can photographs shine a light on a humanitarian crisis? What roles do the arts and humanities play in the world beyond their studios, classrooms, publications and exhibits?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Theatre<\/a>The College of Arts and Letters seeks to answer these questions and more at its upcoming CAL in ACTION showcase event<\/a>, taking place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, in Ashurst Auditorium. <\/span><\/p>\n

Featuring table displays from NAU\u2019s departments of comparative cultural studies, English, philosophy and theater as well as the School of Art + Design, the Kitt School of Music and the Martin-Springer Institute, the CAL in ACTION showcase will highlight the multitude of collaborative projects overseen by the college and give visitors from both the NAU community and the public an opportunity to learn more about how arts and humanities matter to the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The showcase\u2019s signature event, <\/span>\u201cEntangled Spaces: Past, Present and Future\u201d<\/span>\u2014a reference to Charles Darwin\u2019s advice to reflect on the rich interdependency of natural systems\u2014will be a conversation with CAL\u2019s three inaugural arts and humanities fellows, <\/span>Kyoungmee (Kate) Byun<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>Kent Linthicum<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>KT Thompson<\/span><\/b>\u2014all faculty members working on projects that address the year\u2019s theme of environment and sustainability. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe not only hope that people will gain a better understanding of the diversity of the activities and outreach that CAL faculty and students are engaged with, but also that the projects on display and the panel discussion with the AH Fellows will inspire new ways to see what is going on around them,\u201d said <\/span>Alexandra Carpino<\/span><\/b>, CAL associate dean and the event organizer.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Pedro<\/a>Byun, an associate professor of interior design; Linthicum, an assistant teaching professor of humanities; and Thompson, an associate professor of creative writing, were chosen as 2023-2024 AH Fellows for their work that intermingles traditionally humanitarian pursuits\u2014such as the study of literature or design\u2014with concerns for how the modern world operates and how it could operate in the future.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Byun\u2019s project, which incorporates interior design elements that support students with autism spectrum disorder into student housing, shows how human-centered design can make a profound difference in people\u2019s lives. \u201cMy hope,\u201d she said, \u201cis that this initiative highlights the power of thoughtful design in crafting spaces that promote inclusivity and understanding.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thompson said of their work that they learn by crossing disciplinary thresholds: \u201cThe most perplexing and innervating questions for me emerge when poetry and physics meet.\u201d Their current project is concerned with a North American repository of nuclear waste left from the Manhattan Project and the artists and designers tasked with communicating messages of the site\u2019s mortal danger for the next 10,000 years. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Linthicum\u2019s work looks to the past\u2014specifically to literary representations of both slavery and coal in the 18<\/span>th<\/span> and 19<\/span>th<\/span> centuries\u2014to inform the present and future. In his nearly finished manuscript, he makes the case that because the coal industry and the labor of enslaved Black peoples were believed to be similar, ideas about energy and race became entangled. He believes a better understanding of this symbolic entanglement could help with today\u2019s decarbonization efforts.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Kitt<\/a>\u201cMost human societies and cultures have been slow to respond to climate change,\u201d Linthicum said. \u201cThis means we need humanities scholars and social scientists working to understand why we are slow to respond and how to motivate change.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After the panel discussion and Q&A with AH Fellows at 6 p.m., percussion students from the Kitt School of Music will perform \u201cCatching Shadows\u201d by Ivan Trevi\u00f1o.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
