Learn more about the patent process<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW107180787 BCX9\">, NAU Innovations<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW107180787 BCX9\"> and I-Corps, a new program designed to help inventors through the development and commercialization process.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW107180787 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How much innovation goes into healing wounds?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a lot. Everything from the basic bandage and antibiotic gel to novel biomaterials that treat wounds that won\u2019t heal required somebody to come up with an idea, test it, create a product that worked and then patent it and take it to market.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a lengthy process, and one that <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/term\/people\/\"><strong>Robert Kellar<\/strong><\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/term\">Tissue Engineering &amp; Regenerative Medicine Lab<\/a> at NAU, has been through more than once. Kellar\u2019s lab, which works at the intersection of biological sciences and mechanical engineering, is developing novel technologies to treat contaminated skin wounds that won\u2019t heal. The lab is currently working in conjunction with NAU\u2019s Innovation Corps (I-Corps) on a portfolio of patents focused on using ionic liquids as a potent antimicrobial incorporated into wound healing scaffolds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Kellar isn\u2019t the only Lumberjack patenting new technologies. For National Inventors Day on Feb. 10, learn more about a couple of the inventors at NAU, the various patents they hold and I-Corps, a new collaborative initiative that aims to streamline technology development and commercialization among NAU\u2019s innovators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-71183 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/1.png\" alt=\"Did you know: NAU researchers hold 174 non-provisional patents and 134 total patents in areas such as exoskeleton devices, cybersecurity and pathogenic research?\" width=\"615\" height=\"87\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/02\/1.png 615w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/02\/1-300x42.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is I-Corps?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In early 2023, NAU <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nsf-i-corps-hub\/\">became part of the National Science Foundation\u2019s Desert and Pacific Region I-Corps Hub<\/a>. The I-Corps provides training for teams working on inventions with the aim of commercialization. Teams with an innovation or idea for a potential solution sign up for the five-week virtual program and then use that training to gather important insights on how to maximize the impacts of an innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Once that training is completed, it opens opportunities for additional resources, including a small amount of funding to bring an idea to fruition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne primary reason commercializing research fails is because the technology does not address the customers\u2019 actual needs,\u201d I-Corps program director Cristy Salanga said. \u201cThe NSF I-Corps program is a nationwide entrepreneurial curriculum that prepares researchers with skills to enable them to understand the potential of their scientific research and to make an impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Individuals or teams at NAU can enroll in one of the upcoming training opportunities this year. Gore and Associates and Development Engineering Sciences, a biomedical consulting firm he founded. I was immediately hooked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even if \u201cinventor\u201d is your dream job, Kellar said, the process is time-consuming and challenging\u2014even after you\u2019ve developed an invention. Kellar said applying for a patent requires that the applicant demonstrate that their idea is \u201cnon-obvious to someone skilled in the art\u201d and that it\u2019s novel. Pursuing a patent can be expensive and can take years: Kellar\u2019s longest patent took almost eight years to issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-71194 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/3.png\" alt=\"Did you know: The average time from filing to patent is 2-5 years?\" width=\"615\" height=\"87\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/02\/3.png 615w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2024\/02\/3-300x42.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Zach Lerner<\/strong>, an associate professor of mechanical engineering, has gone through the patent process several times for work produced in his <a href=\"https:\/\/biomech.nau.edu\/\">Biomechatronics Lab<\/a>. He seeks to improve mobility and neuromuscular function in people with disabilities through advancing robotic exoskeletons, including inventing new wearable robots to help people perform tasks like climbing stairs and lifting heavy objects. His lab\u2019s latest work includes testing these devices in home and community settings.<\/p>\n<p>To file a patent, he works with student researchers in the lab to write and submit an intellectual property (IP) disclosure to <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/research\/innovations\/\">NAU Innovations<\/a>. If the IP has merit, he works with a patent attorney to draft the claims to submit to the U.S. Patent Office.
