{"id":71076,"date":"2024-01-24T15:48:17","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T22:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=71076"},"modified":"2024-01-24T15:48:32","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T22:48:32","slug":"amplifying-voices-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/amplifying-voices-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Register for Amplifying Voices of Disability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Registration is open for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/ihd\/amplifying-voices\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Amplifying Voices of Disability<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> on Feb. 22, a new, virtual event from the Institute for Human Development (IHD) that provides a platform for disability activists and self-advocates to discuss topics that matter to them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Housed at NAU for more than 50 years, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/ihd\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">IHD<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is one of the nation\u2019s premier University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. Its mission is to ensure that all Americans, including Americans with disabilities, are able to participate fully in all life experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The virtual day of learning aims to change perceptions about disability by addressing timely, pressing issues with speakers who are well-known disability activists and self-advocates with lived experience. Topics include communication and disability representation, disability as a culture, best practices when meeting individuals with disabilities, being an effective ally and advocate and embracing one\u2019s disability identity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Presenters include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emilyladau.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Emily Ladau<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, disability rights activist and writer; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/interwork.sdsu.edu\/drupal\/bios\/tsaia\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Toni Saia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, assistant professor and director of the Rehabilitation Technology Certificate Program at San Diego State University; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninagcomedian.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nina G<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, comedian, author and professional speaker; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/rasheeradopson\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rasheera Dopson<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, IHD\u2019s inclusive excellence fellow and disability justice consultant, researcher and influencer; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aztap.org\/people\/karla-rivas-parker\/\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Karla Rivas Parker<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, assistive technology specialist with the Arizona Technology Access Program at IHD. Also presenting are IHD\u2019s assistant director of academic programs <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sak\u00e9nya McDonald<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and Arizona Rehabilitation Services Administration\u2019s assistive technology coordinator Sue LeHew.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For those who are interested, NAU is offering up to six continuing education credit hours to attendees.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Amplifying Voices of Disability will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22 on Zoom.
