{"id":70791,"date":"2023-12-12T10:09:16","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T17:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=70791"},"modified":"2023-12-12T10:09:16","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T17:09:16","slug":"garcia-grad-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/garcia-grad-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"When your superpower is teaching math"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gabrielle Garcia<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> thought about getting a master\u2019s degree for years, but it always seemed out of reach.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The 20-year math teacher, who has been teaching statistics and other math courses at Coconino High School since she graduated from NAU, realized a few years ago, however, that it didn\u2019t make financial sense, so she quietly set that dream aside.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-70794\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Garcia-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Gabrielle Garcia in her NAU graduation robes\" width=\"286\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/12\/Garcia-1.jpeg 665w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/12\/Garcia-1-200x300.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/>Then she discovered the Arizona Teachers Academy (ATA), which offers scholarships for current Arizona teachers to go back to school, either to finish a bachelor\u2019s degree or to earn a master\u2019s. The dream came back into focus, and now she\u2019s a few short weeks away from achieving it as part of the Class of 2023.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI realized it was possible,\u201d said Garcia, an online student in the master\u2019s in mathematics education program. \u201cI have continued to teach full-time while earning my degree.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her excitement at being able to go to graduate school didn\u2019t make the process any easier, of course. Teaching is already a more than full-time job, and she has four children who regularly needed rides, support, homework help and more. She had to balance all of it, which she accomplished through a lot of late nights and the support of her husband, Jacob.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shannon Guerrero<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, has been both an advisor and a professor for Garcia. She also has seen how effective Garcia is in her own classroom; Guerrero\u2019s daughter has been a student of Garcia\u2019s at CHS.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cGaby truly cares about her students and their success both in and out of the classroom,\u201d she said. \u201cI enjoy working with teachers who love teaching and helping their students learn and grow in their own mathematical skills and identity, and that\u2019s who Gaby is. She works hard to not just complete assignments, but to make connections to her practice, her students and her classroom. She\u2019s the embodiment of a lifelong learner.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Garcia and thousands of other Arizona teachers, the ATA provided opportunities they would never have gotten without it. The program is aimed at addressing the teacher shortage in the state; it offers tuition-free education for teachers who are already working in education in Arizona and commits them to continue teaching in the state for a number of years after graduating. The teachers are able to stay in their schools, doing the necessary student-teaching in their own classrooms, and do all of their coursework online.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-70795\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Garcia-3.jpeg\" alt=\"Gabrielle Garcia and her husband and four kids on a boat with a city and blue sky in the background.\" width=\"402\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/12\/Garcia-3.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/12\/Garcia-3-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/12\/Garcia-3-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/>Since 2019, more than 4,000 students have enrolled in NAU\u2019s ATA spread throughout the state; the most recent class included cohorts in Yavapai, Estrella Mountain and Yuma, with more than 200 online students as well. For the last three years, more than 300 students have graduated from the program, up from the first graduating class of 26 in the 2018019 academic year. About a third of the most recent graduating class identifies as Hispanic or Latino.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ATA also allows students to put what they\u2019re learning directly to use. Garcia took the pedagogy and assessment practices she learned about in her graduate classes and applied them in her own classroom. Her students are directly benefiting from her master\u2019s program.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe content courses have challenged my current knowledge of mathematics and helped me grow in my expertise,\u201d she said. \u201cAdditionally, after I graduate, I\u2019ll be able to teach dual enrollment courses at Coconino, which afford high school students the opportunity to earn college credit while remaining on their high school campus.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That is a game-changer for her students, who are that much more prepared for college before they finish high school.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDual enrollment is becoming an attractive option for students looking to complete their high school requirements while also earning college credits,\u201d Guerrero said. \u201cIt promotes equitable access to college-level courses, gives students a chance to start making progress toward a post-secondary degree and increases the likelihood that they\u2019ll actually enroll in college.
