{"id":70488,"date":"2023-11-06T15:21:28","date_gmt":"2023-11-06T22:21:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=70488"},"modified":"2023-11-29T15:53:22","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T22:53:22","slug":"singer-nsf-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/singer-nsf-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Navigating the intersection of science and art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A grant from the National Science Foundation is funding a unique project aimed at increasing diversity in STEM fields through the inclusion of art in science education.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The goal of the project is to learn how to best foster STEM identity in traditionally marginalized students, said <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alison Singer<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, assistant professor of practice in the Department of Biological Sciences and principal investigator on the almost $500,000 grant. STEM identity is an often overlooked but critical contributor to student success.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSTEM identity, which includes things like a sense of belonging and confidence in one\u2019s own abilities, is vitally important for student retention and success in STEM education and careers,\u201d Singer said. \u201cTraditionally marginalized students tend to have less robust STEM identities and are more likely to drop out of their STEM majors than are non-marginalized students.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Karen Haubensak<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, associate research professor, and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Javier Ceja-Navarro<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, associate professor, both in the Department of Biological Sciences, are co-principal investigators on the project. <strong>Neal Galloway<\/strong>, assistant director of the School of Art and Design, and English professor <strong>Nicole Walker<\/strong> are research collaborators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe need to extend our net to \u2018capture\u2019 more brains, more energy, more perspectives to help find solutions to critical environmental problems,\u201d Haubensak said. \u201cAt NAU we do a fine job of providing students with the solid preparation they need to enter STEM fields including lots of options to join labs and participate in research. But we don\u2019t know anything about the impact of participation in research on these students, especially students who don\u2019t traditionally participate.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The intersection of science and art<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is a particularly important point for Singer, who herself is a writer. She believes having a creative outlet can help someone be a better scientist, and this project is an excellent way to test that hypothesis.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere is evidence that representation, research and perhaps creativity are important in STEM identity development, but most research focuses on only one of them at a time, and the research into creative arts is particularly limited,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This program examines that intersection in a few different ways. It will include teaching about diversity and inclusion, research opportunities and creative outlets to better understand how students develop their STEM identity.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example, there will be a summer research program that focuses on the beginning stages of research\u2014observation, asking questions and figuring out what to do with those questions. Students who participate in the program will take an art or creative writing course that allows them to reflect on their identity as a scientist through creative expression.
