{"id":70384,"date":"2023-10-25T15:32:27","date_gmt":"2023-10-25T22:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=70384"},"modified":"2023-10-25T15:41:57","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T22:41:57","slug":"justice-armfield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/justice-armfield\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching\u2014and learning\u2014from experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the first day of school this semester, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Justice Armfield<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> stood at the front of a DIS 201 class. At 20, he was about the same age as most of the students, but he was a guest presenter, there to share his experiences.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Armfield brings an important perspective to the disability studies class\u2014that of a person with a disability who can describe his experience moving through a world that often isn\u2019t built for him in mind.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI teach people about what it is like to live with Down syndrome,\u201d he said. \u201cI want to help people see that a disability is a difference, but not a limitation to living a happy, healthy life with a purpose.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-70387\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Justice-prepping-for-class-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Justice Armfield sitting in front of a computer preparing for class\" width=\"273\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/10\/Justice-prepping-for-class-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/10\/Justice-prepping-for-class-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/10\/Justice-prepping-for-class-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/10\/Justice-prepping-for-class-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/10\/Justice-prepping-for-class-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/10\/Justice-prepping-for-class-2048x2048.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/>Becoming a teacher<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Armfield co-teaches Introduction to Disability Studies with <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John Schaffer<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an academic program coordinator in NAU\u2019s Institute for Human Development (IHD). The class covers the definitions of disability, models of disabilities, ableism, the history of the disability rights movement, disability pride and culture, media representations of disability and other related topics. The goal of the class, Schaffer said, is to recognize and challenge ableism, teach students how to be better advocates for the disabled community, or for themselves, and how to create a more inclusive and accessible world that accepts and respects people with disabilities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Schaffer and Armfield met last year, when Armfield was on a panel discussion for the Commission on Disability Access and Design. Armfield was part of the Flagstaff Community Transition program, which provides work, training and other opportunities for people with disabilities who are done with high school but still transitioning to adulthood. Armfield was working for facilities in the College of Education.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After they met, Schaffer asked Armfield to be part of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z0HnPw9M5k4\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">video he was producing for IHD<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. From there, the collaboration grew, and Schaffer asked Armfield to co-teach the class with him. Armfield is a great resource for the students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey get to hear about how Justice has typical experiences for a 20-year-old\u2014for example, he saw Pink in concert earlier this month\u2014but also that he has very different experiences, such as going to an overnight camp with other young adults with disabilities,\u201d Schaffer said.\u202f\u201cThey also get to see how we can include someone with Down syndrome in roles that many people don\u2019t think are possible. That kind of representation is very powerful.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Armfield talks through his own disability; Down syndrome means he doesn\u2019t always think clearly, and sometimes he thinks slowly. He doesn\u2019t have any physical disabilities, and he is working to be independent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-70389\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_20190706_190228.jpg\" alt=\"Justice and his family at a restaurant under an umbrella.\" width=\"380\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/10\/IMG_20190706_190228.jpg 900w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/10\/IMG_20190706_190228-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/10\/IMG_20190706_190228-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/>In and out of the classroom<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s not just Pink; Armfield has been seen the Smashing Pumpkins, Jane\u2019s Addiction, Sam Hunt and the Zac Brown Band in concert this year. He also has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@JusticeArmfield\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">YouTube channel<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, he likes to meditate and work out with his father, and he travels as much as he can\u2014he\u2019s been throughout the country as well as North Africa and Europe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In fact, last summer he went to Paris to present with his father and aunt about his experience learning to use the bus system.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That all helped prepare him to be in the classroom teaching and interacting with the students in small groups and one-on-one. He\u2019s enjoyed the teaching experience thus far, he said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI get to help people and have conversations with students who treat me kindly and respectfully,\u201d he said. \u201cWe get to communicate and learn from each other in DIS 201.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s a valuable experience for both students and teacher, Schaffer said. The students learn how to interact with a person with an intellectual or cognitive disability. Armfield interacts with his peers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWith Justice, it\u2019s not much different than interacting with anyone else in the class, and that by itself can help the students feel more comfortable interacting with other people with intellectual or cognitive disabilities,\u201d Schaffer said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How to be a good ally<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This isn\u2019t a hard task, but it does require consistent work and awareness, Schaffer said. It\u2019s also work that everyone\u2014not just people with disabilities or students in DIS classes\u2014needs to actively do. He offered a few tips:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Listen to people with disabilities.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> This includes listening to leaders in the disability rights movement, but also listening to your family, friends, students and co-workers who have disabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Learn to recognize ableism in its many forms<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, both in one\u2019s thoughts and actions and also others. Once you start listening to the disabled voices and believing what they are saying, and become aware of the barriers and stigma around disability, you\u2019ll have a pretty good idea of how you can be a good ally for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Look for opportunities to make society more accessible.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> For students in the program, this may mean going into professional fields that serve people with disabilities. For others, it means advocating for policies that will help those in the disability community.
