Caporaso said recommendations from the paper may become a new standard in the field of microbial ecology and are contributing to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthmicrobiome.org\">Earth Microbiome Project<\/a>, a \u201cmassive project to sample and sequence under-characterized microbial diversity on Earth.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anna Sosa<\/strong>, assistant professor of communication sciences and disorders,\u00a0was awarded the New Investigator\u2019s Research Grant Award by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation at its national convention in Atlanta in November. The $5,000 grant will fund a year-long project investigating how infants and parents communicate during play.<\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Tenney_Erika_Holiday\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Tenney_Erika_Holiday.jpg\" alt=\"Erika Tenney's winning image for the SCOM Holiday Card\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/>Photography major <strong>Erika Tenney\u2019s <\/strong>photo, <em>Falling Winter Sun<\/em>, pictured at right, was selected as the winning image in the 2012 School of Communication Holiday Card Contest. She received $150 and her photo is on the front of the school&#8217;s 2012 holiday card. It and the nine runners-up are on display in the School of Communication gallery during December and January.\u00a0The nine runners up are: <strong>Chance Boultinghouse<\/strong>, <strong>Janelle Cordova<\/strong>, <strong>Jenneke van Genechten<\/strong>, <strong>Rachel Gibbons<\/strong>, <strong>Audrey Hirschl<\/strong>, <strong>Dakota Peterson<\/strong>, <strong>Amanda Quinlan<\/strong>, <strong>Jasmine Riley<\/strong>, <strong>Xiaoxhen Wang<\/strong>. Judges of the contest were faculty members <strong>Laura Camden<\/strong>, <strong>Russ Gilbert<\/strong>, <strong>John Hessinger<\/strong> and <strong>Sam Minkler<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rodrigo de Toledo<\/strong>, associate professor of visual communication, has a short video\/animation called <em>Hollow Null<\/em> on exhibit in the contemporary art exhibition \u201cID\/Identities Istambul\u201d in Turkey. The video is a whimsical adaptation from part of de Toledo\u2019s illustrated book <em>Chronicles of Entanglement<\/em>, about the search for identity and integration in a foreign land\u2014the search for creative balance, beauty and the muse. He also composed the video\u2019s original music, and shot footage in downtown Flagstaff.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chris Parish<\/strong>, a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability, was named the Natural Resource Professional of the Year by the Arizona Game and Fish Department.\u00a0Parish is the project director for the Peregrine Fund\u2019s Condor Recovery Program and will be recognized at the Arizona Game and Fish Commission Awards Banquet on Jan. 12 in Carefree, Ariz.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-dec-7-2012\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
