{"id":69945,"date":"2023-09-11T16:48:56","date_gmt":"2023-09-11T23:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=69945"},"modified":"2023-09-11T16:48:56","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T23:48:56","slug":"chischilly-influential-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/chischilly-influential-women\/","title":{"rendered":"VP Chischilly named to statewide Most Influential Women list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ann Marie Chischilly<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the vice president of Native American Initiatives at NAU, was one of 20 women named to AZ Big Media\u2019s 2023 list of Most Influential Women in Arizona Business.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She was one of 34 women chosen from more than 1,900 considered for the award, which highlights women who have demonstrated fearlessness, leadership and innovation in their work to shape Arizona\u2019s legacy for future generations. She attributed the award and the accomplishments that led to it to her entire team, as well as to the leadership of President <strong>Jos\u00e9 Luis Cruz Rivera<\/strong> and his commitment to Indigenous Peoples.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI am so proud of this recognition of VP Chischilly, given her dedication to advancing our work as an Indigenous-serving institution for the betterment of the Native nations of Arizona and beyond,\u201d President <\/span>Cruz Rivera<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> said. \u201cShe is tireless in her efforts to ensure NAU is working to better partner with and serve Indigenous communities in Arizona by expanding access to Native American students and supporting their success.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69947\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69947\" style=\"width: 313px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-69947\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Chischilly.jpeg\" alt=\"Ann Marie Chischilly portrait\" width=\"313\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/09\/Chischilly.jpeg 611w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/09\/Chischilly-183x300.jpeg 183w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Ann Marie Chischilly. Chischilly wore a red shawl to recognize and remember the thousands of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) and relatives; &#8220;it\u2019s important to recognize that when you see me, you see them and yourselves.&#8221;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chischilly, who is Din\u00e9, has spent her career working for future generations. Prior to her position as vice president, she served as executive director of the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals at NAU and as senior assistant general counsel to the Gila River Indian Community. She also serves on several federal advisory committees, including the EPA\u2019s National Advisory Committee and National Safe Drinking Water Council and the Advisory Committee for the Sustained National Climate Assessment. Additionally, she works with the United Nations on issues of the protection of traditional knowledge and co-wrote \u201cGuidelines for the Use of Traditional Knowledge in Climate Change Initiatives.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But her inspiration comes from the past and the matriarchs who shaped her life, including her mother, Marie, and grandmothers Katherine and Stella. Her mother is her greatest influence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cShe was a single mom raising four kids,\u201d Chischilly said. \u201cShe went to school for nursing and served our community for 36 years, and everyone knows her as the nice nurse.\u202fShe taught me that my faith was the most important factor along with hard work.\u202fShe sacrificed so many things for us four, always supporting and praying for our health and happiness.\u202fI continue to learn from her and am so thankful she is my sh\u00edma (mom).\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now, Chischilly leads NAU\u2019s work in outreach and partnerships with Native American communities as laid out in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/president\/strategic-plan\/#dynamic-link-8\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">NAU 2025 \u2013 Elevating Excellence<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
