It\u2019s the flag of the <\/span>Explorers Club<\/span><\/a>, an international organization that encourages pioneering exploration and scientific endeavor into the as-yet-unknown parts of the world\u2014and beyond. Only a few explorers get approval to take a flag with them on their expeditions. This summer, one of those flags accompanied <\/span>Jut Wynne<\/span><\/b>, an assistant research professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, and his students to the Belize Tropical Ecology Field School.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s a big deal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Students\u201cThe prestigious flag of the Explorers Club marks an expedition of exceptional contribution to fields\u202fof science, natural history and exploration,\u201d said Martin Nweeia, chairman of flag and honors and vice president of the Explorers Club.\u202f\u201cDr. Wynne’s expedition marks a pioneering effort in Belize to continue his work in cave biodiversity.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wynne, who is a fellow of the Explorers Club, takes students to study the ecology of the rain forests of Belize every summer. Colloquially known as Jungle Boot Camp, students receive on-the-job training and dive into field research. Their research involves studying the ecosystems of caves and research objectives include mist-netting bats, capturing small mammals, documenting animal activity, collecting cave-dwelling arthropods and collecting bat call data and trail camera data of the diversity of wildlife species, including jaguars and pumas, that use the caves.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"AStudents also provided field support to the <\/span>Crocodile Research Coalition<\/span><\/a> along the Belizean Coast, using high-lumen spotlights on a small fishing vessel to search for crocodiles at night and monitored howler and spider monkey populations at <\/span>Runaway Creek Nature Reserve<\/span><\/a> by day. At the end of the field school, team members completed final projects designed to take them through all phases of scientific research, and they presented their results as a science poster and video presentation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Liliya Giroux<\/span><\/b>, a senior environmental sciences major from Surprise, was one of the \u201caspiring scientists and adventurers\u201d who signed up for Jungle Boot Camp. She spent her days trekking through the pine savannah or rainforest collecting data. The once-in-a-lifetime experience of working alongside conservationists, in reserves and animal sanctuaries gave her a greater understanding of the effects of deforestation on the animals in the Belizean rainforest.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile this study abroad trip focused on learning several different ecological field techniques, we also got a great glimpse at local culture, food, music and Mayan history,\u201d Giroux said. \u201cI learned about the exciting ecology of a tropical environment, the current threats of habitat loss and the beautiful culture and history of Belize. It was truly unforgettable.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
