What does that mean for the future?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the American West, mountains see less snowfall, higher spring temperatures that melt the snow earlier and increasingly warm summers. Top photo: Austin Simonpietri and Carbone<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Carbone, an assistant research professor in the Center for Ecosystem Science and Society (Ecoss), received almost $1 million from the DOE\u2019s Office of Science as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/science\/articles\/department-energy-announces-131-million-environmental-systems-science\">$13 million investment in environmental system science (ESS) research<\/a>. The three-year project includes NAU co-PIs <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andrew Richardson<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a Regents\u2019 professor in Ecoss and the School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems; <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ben Lucas<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an assistant professor of statistics, and Adrianna Foster and Will Wieder from the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Ecoss Ph.D. student <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Austin Simonpietri<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> also will participate in the research.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The work, which will take place near Crested Butte, Colorado, builds on research Carbone has conducted for many years at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory; it will allow her team to expand their measurements during the cold season when snow is on the ground. They also will quantify CO<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">production by microorganisms and plant roots across different elevations and seasons.
