{"id":69666,"date":"2023-07-25T12:48:25","date_gmt":"2023-07-25T19:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=69666"},"modified":"2023-07-26T08:41:01","modified_gmt":"2023-07-26T15:41:01","slug":"race-route-66","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/race-route-66\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring race and space along Route 66"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More than 60 teachers from throughout the nation spent a week in Flagstaff to delve into the history of race and space of historic Route 66.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As part of Racialized Spaces on Route 66, a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History and Culture project, the teachers, librarians, counselors and educators visited historic <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Green Book<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and Route 66 sites, heard oral histories from African American, Hispanic\/Latinx and Indigenous respondents, discussed best practices in teaching\/learning and developed lesson plans that examine Route 66 as the \u201cMother Road\u201d of community-based stories.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The co-directors, associate professor <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gretchen McAllister<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and former NAU professor <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ricardo Guthrie<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, were joined by Cline Library archivist <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sean Evans<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Joseph Martin<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership.
