{"id":69399,"date":"2023-05-31T14:43:43","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T21:43:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=69399"},"modified":"2023-05-31T14:43:43","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T21:43:43","slug":"aiitec-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/aiitec-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Community invited to participate in 13th annual Indigenous language education conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The College of Education at Northern Arizona University invites the community to participate in the 2023 Hybrid Stabilizing Indigenous Languages American Indian\/Indigenous Education Conference (AIITEC), which takes place June 23-24 at NAU\u2019s Flagstaff Mountain campus. The theme of the conference is \u201cReturning to our languages and ways of knowing,\u201d addresses the success of Indigenous language revitalization efforts since the passage of the Native American Languages Act of 1990 and the important role of schools in nurturing and passing on the languages of Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n<p>The program includes presentations from Hopi, Ute, Apache and Din\u00e9 language teachers who will provide strategies and resources that participants can use to welcome students to their classrooms and promote student success.<\/p>\n<p>The National Coalition of Native American Language Schools in collaboration with a research team funded by the Spencer Foundation will provide an overview of these successful immersion schools and the policy and regulations which support these programs. Hawaiian-language immersion high school students, teachers and teacher-educators will celebrate 40 years of a pre-K-Ph.D. program.<\/p>\n<p>The conference will address:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Culturally responsive school practices to promote the success of Indigenous students<\/li>\n<li>Language revitalization<\/li>\n<li>Parental\/community involvement<\/li>\n<li>STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)<\/li>\n<li>Oral tradition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The conference will also include presentation from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Richard Littlebear\u2014President Emeritus, Chief Dull Knife College: \u201cConveying the Pleasure of Speaking, Reading and Writing our own Languages\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Christine Sims\u2014Department of Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies, University of New Mexico: \u201cEarly Childhood Partnerships to support Indigenous Communities\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Robin Butterfield\u2014Native American Parent Technical Assistance Center: \u201cDeveloping Native American Student Leadership\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Leslie Harper\u2014National Coalition of Native American Language Schools and Programs: \u201cNative American Language Medium\/Immersion Education Present Extent\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Louise Benally<strong>\u2014<\/strong>Dine Language Teachers Association: \u201cCan the Mentor-Apprentice Program Method Produce Din\u00e9 Fluent Speakers?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous language teachers from Arizona, New Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, Wyoming, Canada and Australia.
