{"id":69365,"date":"2023-05-17T09:51:20","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T16:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=69365"},"modified":"2023-05-17T09:51:20","modified_gmt":"2023-05-17T16:51:20","slug":"energy-awards-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/energy-awards-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Two grad students earn research recognition from the Department of Energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Two NAU students were selected for a prestigious research program through the U.S. Department of Energy, which will give them the opportunity to do groundbreaking research in a national lab.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John Dallyn<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a Ph.D. student in applied physics, and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Raina Fitzpatrick<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a Ph.D. student in biology, are among the 87 students selected for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/science\/articles\/does-office-science-graduate-student-research-scgsr-program-selects-87-outstanding\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Office of Science\u2019s Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The aim of the program is to prepare students to enter jobs that are critically important to DOE\u2019s mission and will help secure the United States\u2019 national position at the forefront of discovery and innovation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThese awards recognize outstanding student achievement in their work with national laboratories,\u201d said <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Maribeth Watwood<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, dean of the Graduate College at NAU.\u202f\u201cThe program is highly competitive, and NAU students\u2019 success, though not surprising, is delightful.\u202fThese students will be well-poised to launch into impactful careers thanks to the prestige of the SCGSR award and, most importantly, the outstanding work of these students at our nation\u2019s national laboratories.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John Dallyn, Sandia<\/span><\/b> National<b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Laboratories<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-69367\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0861.png\" alt=\"John Dallyn\" width=\"239\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/IMG_0861.png 416w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/IMG_0861-139x300.png 139w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dallyn\u2019s doctoral research is on the theoretical modeling of Brillouin laser dynamic; the Brillouin<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">laser is a type of laser produced by the scattering of coherent light off of sound waves. He plans to graduate in 2025.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">His work at Sandia will be on theoretical models for a new type of device called acoustoelectrically enhanced Brillouin (AEB) devices. AEB devices allow for dynamic control of the Brillouin scattering process by applying electric fields coupled with sound waves in the device to modulate the lifetime of the sound waves.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Working at Sandia National Laboratories also will allow for experimental experience in the designing and fabrication process that he otherwise wouldn\u2019t be able to do.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOne of the DOE Office of Science Mission Areas is in the realm of microelectronics, and the integration of highly coherent light sources onto chip platforms is a key part of that research area,\u201d he said. \u201cBrillouin lasers are well-suited to the chip-scale, and the development of AEB lasers will improve the performance of Brillouin-based, microelectronic platforms, such as chip-scale atomic clocks or new transmission and receiver links for a modernized and more energy efficient data center interconnect.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Working at Sandia after graduation is on Dallyn\u2019s list, so this opportunity will help him with that decision, he hopes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-69368\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Fitzpatrick.png\" alt=\"Raina Fitzpatrick working in a lab\" width=\"381\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Fitzpatrick.png 1000w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Fitzpatrick-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Fitzpatrick-768x511.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/>Raina Fitzpatrick, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fitzpatrick\u2019s research is in microbial growth and mediation of element cycling in different ecosystems including freshwaters and soils.
