{"id":69339,"date":"2023-05-17T17:30:14","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T00:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=69339"},"modified":"2023-05-18T11:11:24","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T18:11:24","slug":"bossett-grad-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/bossett-grad-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"A role model in astronomy for students of color\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From preschool to 8<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> grade, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Malik Bossett<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> attended an African-centered school in Oakland, California, where he was surrounded by people that looked like him. Then, he transferred to a predominately white high school where he was the only Black male in his graduating class.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt was a culture shock,\u201d Bossett said. But he persevered and used the discomfort to fuel his passion for becoming a Black scholar.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He had been interested in science from an early age. His parents took him to the California Academy of Sciences every Friday to explore and learn. He gravitated to the solar system exhibit, and his love of science grew into a deep passion for astronomy.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before long, he found himself spending his free time studying astronomy books and watching shows like \u201cCosmos: A Space Odyssey\u201d and \u201cHow the Universe Works.\u201d When he found out there was an astronomy club at his high school, he joined immediately.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMy high school co-owned a small observatory near Yosemite National Park, and we would travel there once a month. While we were there, we learned how to take pictures of different celestial objects,\u201d Bossett said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0537.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-69380 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0537.jpg\" alt=\"Malik Bossett\" width=\"477\" height=\"615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/IMG_0537.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/IMG_0537-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/IMG_0537-794x1024.jpg 794w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/IMG_0537-768x990.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/a>As one of only a few people of color in the club, the lack of diversity motivated him to inspire more kids of color to pursue the field of astronomy and help increase access for them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDuring my senior year, I secured funding for and led a field trip for Black middle school students at my K-8 school to the Chabot Space and Science Center to pique their interest in the field. After the field trip, I wanted to keep inspiring and encouraging more kids of color to pursue STEM careers.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When it came time for Bossett to enroll in university, NAU (and more specifically Flagstaff) made sense. As the first internally recognized Dark Sky City and home to the famous Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered, he could not think of a better place to further his education and build on his passion for the stars.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At NAU, Bossett found his community in the Black Student Union and flourished academically\u2014he was part of the Honors college and participated in three Research Experiences for Undergraduates with the National Science Foundation, two of which led to peer-reviewed publications. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSince Malik was a freshman, he already was ahead of his peers and started to do research and learn all kinds of techniques and knowledge needed to become an astronomer,\u201d said <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lisa Chien<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, assistant teaching professor in the Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science. \u201cDuring his time at NAU, he has gained skills and made connections all over the country. Yet Malik is such a humble, down-to-earth and calm person to talk to.
