{"id":69219,"date":"2023-05-08T14:41:57","date_gmt":"2023-05-08T21:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=69219"},"modified":"2023-05-11T11:34:41","modified_gmt":"2023-05-11T18:34:41","slug":"briggs-commencement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/briggs-commencement\/","title":{"rendered":"How finding solutions for individual patients is motivating this future doctor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Melissa Briggs<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> writes her personal statement for her applications to medical school, she\u2019ll have a few topics to consider.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She could write about her undergrad research studying rural food deserts and the unique needs of the people who live in them and the lesson she took away from that work\u2014that there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to most health concerns and a good doctor will need to spend time gathering information and tailoring solutions for the individual sitting in front of her.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Or she could write about her internship in the medical examiner\u2019s office assisting with autopsies and how this helped motivate her to become a physician so she could help save lives but also taught her the importance of having empathy and respect for every person, even those who have already died.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-69222\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Briggs1.png\" alt=\"Melissa Briggs by the library holding a plaque from the Honors College\" width=\"380\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Briggs1.png 736w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Briggs1-245x300.png 245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/>Or, the Honors College student majoring in biomedical science, whose resume is bursting with experiences that prepared her for this path, could write about the imposter syndrome that, no matter how many times she succeeds, nags at her that she\u2019s not good enough until she recommits herself to push out of her comfort zone to take on new challenges.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Briggs has a lot of things to do after she graduates from NAU this weekend\u2014studying for the MCAT. Applying to med school. Going to Laos for a month with the GIVE Program. Continuing her internship with the Coconino County Office of the Medical Examiner. Volunteering for a local hospice. Being a TA for a Gross Anatomy course at NAU. Being a TA (pending) for the University of Colorado School of Medicine\u2019s Wilderness First Responder program. It\u2019s all building on the person she\u2019s become while at NAU.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAt the end of each year, I have been able to look back at where I started and see how much I have changed,\u201d she said. \u201cEach year I step a little further from my 18-year-old self, and each year I feel a little prouder than I did before. One of my favorite things about my time as an undergraduate student was the opportunity to let my ambitions and curiosity run wild. My eagerness to learn and grow never went unrewarded! I am so, so excited about everything that lies ahead of me.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Undergraduate research with CUPI\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-69221\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Briggs2.png\" alt=\"Melissa Briggs explains her research at the 2022 Undergrad Symposium\" width=\"313\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Briggs2.png 738w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Briggs2-246x300.png 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Because of her interest in medicine, Briggs initially looked at research in NAU\u2019s cardiology lab, but it wasn\u2019t quite what she wanted to do. She learned about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/sustainable-communities\/cupi\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Community-University Public Inquiry<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (CUPI) program, which offered hands-on, community-oriented opportunities for research. She joined the Rural Food Systems pod, which was working with communities that didn\u2019t have readily accessible sources of nutrition, so they depended on food banks in their area.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Rural Food Systems pod conducted research on the effectiveness of the food boxes that St. Mary\u2019s Food Bank was supplying communities. Briggs and her team went to Yuma, Kingman, Yucca, Page and Chinle and volunteered at food drives, interviewed volunteers and food bank representatives and surveyed the recipients of food boxes. She also worked to create stronger connections between food banks and local farms, which would mean greater access to fresh produce.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The pod aimed to build relationships with communities and learn about the experiences of people who received food boxes. She learned so much about the complexity that is human health through that experience; so often, eating well and exercising is the go-to answer for health issues, especially for those with obesity, diabetes, chronic inflammation and others. But \u201ceat healthy\u201d is much harder\u2014sometimes impossible\u2014when there are no grocery stores, so a food bank is the primary source of food.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDespite being born and raised in Arizona, I had never before felt more connected with the other communities in the state or seen so much of the beautiful land and cultures until I joined this program,\u201d Briggs said. \u201cThere is something deeply meaningful about connecting with and serving the community that deeply resonated with me. I had not recognized the deep prevalence of food deserts throughout Arizona, let alone the entire nation, and it gave me new insight into the barriers people face when obtaining nutritious food for themselves and their families.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This work also gave her a desire to continue working in rural areas, which both in Arizona and nationwide are experiencing critical health care shortages. She and the rest of her interdisciplinary team, presented their work at the 2022 Undergrad Symposium.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Interning at the ME\u2019s office<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Briggs applied for this internship after taking a Gross Anatomy course, and she was excited to put what she\u2019d learned in class to use. But it wasn\u2019t easy. Assisting with autopsies is a challenging assignment that can be grim; she\u2019s witnessed firsthand the deadly effects of trauma, sepsis, illness, decay and more. It\u2019s made her even more sure she wants to be a doctor and also helped prepare her for the knowledge that she won\u2019t be able to save every patient.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In fact, what she\u2019s faced with every day at work is that there is nothing left to be done for the person\u2019s life; nothing she does will change their outcome. One of the soberest reminders of the limitations of medicine is when she sees a pacemaker or some other medical device designed to save people\u2019s lives that ultimately failed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-69255\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Briggs3.jpg\" alt=\"Melissa Briggs throwing her grad cap in the air\" width=\"331\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Briggs3.jpg 676w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Briggs3-203x300.jpg 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" \/>But she can treat every decedent with dignity, and she can prepare herself to do all she can for her patients when she\u2019s a doctor. That sense of duty to her future patients and the current decedents motivates her even through the difficult moments.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis position, more than anything, has highlighted how important it is to me to make a difference in the circumstances of the people I work with,\u201d Briggs said. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize just how much fulfillment I got from ensuring I could have a positive impact on a patient that comes into my care,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Maisie El-Ters, the lead forensic investigator and internship coordinator for the ME\u2019s office, said Briggs has a passion for learning that influences how she approaches her work; she has demonstrated a commitment to growing as a person and a professional.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWorking with Melissa has given me a new excitement for my work,\u201d she said. \u201cHer continuous curiosity and pure excitement to learn and grow as a professional is contagious.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her time at NAU and beyond<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Briggs came to NAU from Queen Creek; Flagstaff was close enough to home to see her family regularly and far enough to give her the chance to shed the labels she\u2019d had in high school and start fresh to grow into the person she now is.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To do so, she took on as many opportunities for growth as she could. To help overcome self-doubt, she applied for the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program. She became an SI leader, which required that she tutor students with confidence, demonstrate empathy and interpersonal skills and be a leader. She spent last summer getting certified in a Wilderness First Responder course and studied abroad in Ireland.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Jane Gilbert<\/strong>, assistant manager of the SI program, said Briggs worked with more than 500 students in challenging biology courses and proved herself to be a kind, considerate, caring and professional tutor.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMelissa is not only committed to her work, but she is warmly committed to the people she serves,\u201d Gilbert said. \u201cShe has already proven<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-69257\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Briggs2.jpeg\" alt=\"Melissa Briggs in a grad cap and sash\" width=\"457\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Briggs2.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Briggs2-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/05\/Briggs2-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/> that she is capable of proactively handling some of life\u2019s toughest challenges. Her future is wide open\u2014and Melissa is someone who will make the world a better place.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Briggs has worked hard in and out of the classroom to develop the traits she wants to have as a physician\u2014empathy toward her patients, problem-solving and decision-making abilities and a drive to give patients the best quality of care.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWith the help of NAU, I feel empowered and determined to continue advancing throughout my academic career,\u201d she said. \u201cI have developed strong leadership skills, embraced my confidence, and focused my sense of direction.
