The team, including <strong>Thomas Kolb <\/strong>and <strong>Andrea Thode<\/strong>, professors in the School of Forestry, <strong>George Koch<\/strong>, professor of biological sciences, and Ph.D. student <strong>Julia Tatum<\/strong>, will focus their study on Arizona\u2019s forests and Ponderosa pines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_9908.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-68507 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_9908.jpg\" alt=\"Teki Sankey, with one of her lab's field drones.\" width=\"365\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/03\/IMG_9908.jpg 1512w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/03\/IMG_9908-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/03\/IMG_9908-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2023\/03\/IMG_9908-1152x1536.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/a>\u201cMy collaborators understand the ecophysiological processes regarding how forest ecosystems are behaving and changing due to land management treatments and drought, so we\u2019re combining our expertise to understand and analyze how a thinned forest right outside Flagstaff and an adjacent non-thinned forest are responding to regional drought,\u201d Sankey said. \u201cThis way we\u2019ll be able to give insight into the many forest restoration treatments being implemented throughout Arizona and whether they are making our forests more resilient to drought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sankey, the principal investigator, is using NASA&#8217;s relatively new thermal sensor ECOSTRESS, which is aboard the International Space Station. This satellite measures land surface temperature, soil moisture and water usage of the forest canopy through evapotranspiration. Sankey also will integrate her unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images for more detailed data acquisition. The team will validate their findings with field measurements of canopy and moisture and a long-term dataset on forest soil moisture response to forest thinning and drought from Sankey\u2019s lab. The new project will test the capacity of NASA&#8217;s new ECOSTRESS system to detect drought stress in ponderosa pine,\u201d Kolb said. \u201cThe project also will evaluate the capacity of the new NASA system for measuring the impacts of forest restoration treatments, such as thinning, on forest water balance and stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team hypothesizes that ECOSTRESS will be able to measure whether thinned areas have a higher level of moisture, and the project aims to determine if the forest restoration treatments result in water benefits for the entire forested ecosystem. The project also will validate whether NASA\u2019s satellite accurately detects soil and canopy moisture and allow the team to examine the effects of the land treatments effects on 2.4 million acres (about the area of Connecticut) across Arizona. Sankey notes their project will be able to check for accuracy and assess the satellite&#8217;s sensitivity regarding soil moisture measurements. Utilizing her lab and expertise, the team will work to validate the readings from the satellite with their field measurements and findings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI study remote sensing science with a heavy emphasis on machine learning and statistics. The ECOSTRESS mission aims to answer questions related to changes in water availability and their impact on the environment, particularly on plants. Her UAVs have heat-sensing technologies and have been able to survey different forest areas showing that thinned forests have fared better during drought. Sankey\u2019s expertise and previous research made her a perfect candidate to work with NASA\u2019s ECOSTRESS satellite. The grant will also partially fund Tatum\u2019s position, who is currently working in Sankey\u2019s remote sensing lab as she progresses in her field of environmental science and remote sensing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hope for any research is that it will advance scientific understanding and contribute to a better, more sustainable world.
