The Commission makes recommendations to the university President and leadership about women\u2019s issues addressing concerns in university policies, practices and programs to enact constructive change as they envision NAU as a \u201cwelcoming, diverse and family<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">friendly community that serves as a model of data-contrast=\"auto\">, interim assistant vice provost of NAU Online and co-chair of CSW. \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Often when we look at educational practices, our history can create a false story that women were not present or involved in major transformational events and decisions. Women\u2019s history month provides a way to highlight past and present contributions of women to our society in celebration and can also shine a light on practices that perpetuate inequity.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Clifford added that CSW\u2019s focus on inclusion occurs year-round as emphasizing the value of women&#8217;s voices and accomplishments<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and elevating histories that previously have not been part of the common narrative cannot be completed in a single month.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cNAU is working to increase intersectionality into the curriculum,\u201d said Clifford. \u201cI believe it could be a powerful and effective strategy to connect people across social categories, positionality and social identity. Bringing awareness to the wonderful accomplishments women have made throughout history and at present can inspire our students and raise awareness about discrimination and gender parity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">One way that CSW brings awareness to the incredible accomplishments of one woman at NAU is through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/crowdfund.foundationnau.org\/project\/30416\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Martha Portree Commission on the Status of Women Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This scholarship honors the memory of <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Martha Jean Portree<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a member of the NAU community from December 2000 to July 2007. She served as a reference services librarian at Cline Library and was known for her dedication and library expertise. Alongside academic programs librarian <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tina Adams<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Cline Library archivist <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sean Evans <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and head of teaching, learning and research at Cline Library <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John Doherty<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Portree co-wrote \u201cOvercoming Transactional Distance: Instruction Intent in an E-mail Reference Service,\u201d which was published in the Winter 2008 issue of<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Reference and User Services Quarterly<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; her coauthors dedicated the article to Portree after her passing on July 7, 2007.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At NAU, Portree was a tireless advocate of the NAU Commission on the Status of Women\u2019s mission and played an active and essential role in the work of CSW on behalf of women on the NAU campus. In 2003<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> she helped create an annual Commission on the Status of Women scholarship for single mothers who excel academically.
