Join Latin American Studies for a reading in English and Spanglish by author, artist and academic Santiago Vaquera-V\u00e1squez from his current book-in-progress, <\/span>Field Notes from Borderlands<\/span><\/i>. Vaquera-V\u00e1squez is an associate professor of Hispanic Southwest literature and creative writing in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico and is a recognized author of short stories and other literature as well as an artist and broadcaster. His recent publications include anthologies in Spain, Italy, Latin America and the United States and include <\/span>Relatos sobre la corrupci\u00f3n social<\/span><\/i> (2012), <\/span>En la frontera: i migliori raconti della letteratura chicana<\/span><\/i> (2008), <\/span>Peque\u00f1as resistencias 4<\/span><\/i> (2005), <\/span>Se habla espa\u00f1ol <\/span><\/i>(2000), and <\/span>L\u00edneas a\u00e9reas<\/span><\/i> (1998). <\/span>Vaquera-V\u00e1squez has also published in literary journals such as <\/span>Make Literary Magazine,\u202fEtiqueta Negra, Los noveles, Paralelo Sur,\u202fRevista 0, Camino Real <\/span><\/i>and<\/span>\u202fVentana abierta<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Santiago\u201cSantiago Vaquera-V\u00e1squez <\/span>is a perfect example of those Hispanic writers in the United States who are unknown because they write in Spanish,\u201d said Cornell Professor of Latin American Literature Edmundo Paz-<\/span>Sold\u00e1n. \u201c<\/span>Their tales speak of people trapped between two worlds, between the North and the South, caught and not being able to connect with anyone.\u202fThey are searching for something that is unobtainable.\u202fOther times these characters seem to discover a sense of freedom at these crossroads as if they were lifting up the anchor, as if this journey, this nomadic existence, were the essential human condition.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
