{"id":67051,"date":"2022-10-05T13:51:55","date_gmt":"2022-10-05T20:51:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=67051"},"modified":"2022-10-05T13:51:55","modified_gmt":"2022-10-05T20:51:55","slug":"a-microbial-universe-in-soil-and-a-beetles-gut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/a-microbial-universe-in-soil-and-a-beetles-gut\/","title":{"rendered":"A microbial universe in soil and a beetle\u2019s gut\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/un-universo-microbiano-en-el-suelo-y-el-intestino-de-un-insecto\/\">Read this story in Spanish here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Researcher <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Javier Ceja-Navarro<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has been a science communicator since he was a child.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI have one younger brother, and to him, I was the encyclopedia,\u201d said Ceja-Navarro, a professor of microbiology in the Department of Biological Sciences and the Center for Ecosystem Science and Society at Northern Arizona University. \u201cHe would ask me how things work. How <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">everything<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> worked,\u201d said Ceja-Navarro, laughing. \u201c\u2019I need to study!\u2019 I thought, so I can give him answers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, Ceja-Navarro went to the small library in his town of Tuxpan, Nayarit, Mexico, read books, and came back ready to explain the answers he\u2019d found to his brother.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ceja-Navarro also was an avid artist as a kid\u2014a skill he has continued to cultivate as part of his science communication practice. By the time he entered high school, Ceja-Navarro knew he wanted to be close to science. At the age of 15, he was awarded a scholarship to enter a high school track in clinical analyses, where he spent most of his time collecting all kinds of human samples to test for diseases.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMany of the diseases we saw in my region are caused by protists, and it got me thinking: where did they come from?\u201d Protists, a diverse group of one-celled micro-organisms found in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, include some infamous pathogens: <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giardia lamblia<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a common intestinal parasite, and <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Plasmodium<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a large group of protists that cause the disease malaria in humans. \u201cAnd wow, then I saw protists in soil,\u201d Ceja-Navarro said. Intrigued, he learned to isolate them in the lab.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ceja-Navarro also credits his mother for helping him learn to talk about his research with non-scientists.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMy mother was always super curious and read the books I read,\u201d said Ceja-Navarro, who is a first-generation college student in chemical engineering and received a doctorate in biotechnology from Centro de Investigacion y de Estudios Avanzados del I.P.N in Mexico City. When he was preparing for his Ph.D. defense, he practiced his talk for his mother. \u201c\u2019No, no, no,\u2019\u201d he remembers her saying. \u201c\u2018Explain it to me in a way that I can understand.\u2019\u201d So, he practiced and explained again.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When he joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in northern California as a postdoctoral scientist studying the insect-gut microbiome, Ceja-Navarro noticed that in his new department\u2014where soil was the main topic of research\u2014&#8221;everybody was talking about soil bacteria.\u201d But he didn\u2019t hear many questions about those protists he\u2019d been thinking about since his days as technician in clinical analyses. \u201cI thought: where are the protists, when protists eat pretty much everybody else?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Expanding this conversation inspired Ceja-Navarro to study microbial food webs in soil and the often-complex relationships among microbes and the visible world. One relationship Navarro continues to decode is how microbes in the guts of insects allow certain insects to be \u201cbioreactors.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For instance, the coffee-borer beetle, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hypothenemus hampei<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can consume lethal amounts of caffeine as it chews through its diet of coffee berries. Ceja-Navarro suspected the beetle was getting help from its associated microbes, and by sequencing its gut microbiome, narrowed the suspect list down to few bacteria, including <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pseudomonas fulva<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. When he fed the beetle an antibiotic that killed off all the bacteria in its gut, Ceja-Navarro saw that the beetle could no longer digest caffeine or reproduce. When he added back <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">P. fulva<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to the beetle\u2019s guts, its coffee-absorbing superpower came back.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Screen-Shot-2022-10-04-at-11.51.45-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67056 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Screen-Shot-2022-10-04-at-11.51.45-AM.png\" alt=\"Rendering of beetle\" width=\"330\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2022\/10\/Screen-Shot-2022-10-04-at-11.51.45-AM.png 551w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2022\/10\/Screen-Shot-2022-10-04-at-11.51.45-AM-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe showed we can study the environment represented by the beautiful guts of this beetle in a systematic way,\u201d he said. Such discoveries could have big implications for crop management, epidemiology and even energy solutions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But Ceja-Navarro says that\u2019s just one example of the holistic research approach he brings to NAU. He sees great potential in studying the microbiome as a complex system governed, like other food webs, by apex predators\u2014often protists. And as one of the leaders of a new $3 million project from the Department of Energy, Ceja-Navarro and his colleagues at NAU and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory will be investigating who eats whom in soil, and how that chain influences critical biogeochemical processes like carbon and nitrogen cycling. \u201cI want to make everybody excited about all the members of the soil microbiome, so we all take a whole-system perspective,\u201d Ceja-Navarro said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For him, that excitement begins with mentoring students. \u201cI want to share with students my curiosity about our world, get them thinking about the little aspects of the world we don&#8217;t usually think about.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He also wants to help more Latinos pursue science as a major and career.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen I got to Berkeley Lab, I didn&#8217;t see many Latinos working in the laboratory,\u201d Ceja-Navarro said. So he joined an outreach program, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceatcal.berkeley.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Science at Cal<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in which university scientists visit local libraries and schools to host <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/scV7DyZ-fH0\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">science conversations<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Spanish. In northern Arizona, he hopes to share his science with Latino students and communities beyond campus, as well.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAs a Latino, I think it\u2019s a responsibility of mine to share this excitement about science with other Latinos. My hope is to begin to \u2018hear\u2019 more Latinos in the laboratory, too, speaking Spanish.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Ceja-Navarro, kindling interest in science among students from all backgrounds is not only about education and career opportunities but strengthening the science itself. In his panoramic sense of what science can accomplish, bringing more people to the lab bench is an essential way for the field of microbial ecology to meaningfully solve the host of mysteries contained in a microbiome.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cA microbiome is a universe full of stars,\u201d Ceja-Navarro said. \u201cIt\u2019s that complex. Imagine being able to study each of those stars\u2014think of all the things we could discover!
