Aspens and other deciduous trees are an autumn staple\u2014generating tourism revenue, Instagram-worthy content and important biodiversity. A team from the School of Forestry that includes professors <strong>Kristen Waring<\/strong> and <strong>Richard Hofstetter<\/strong> and graduate students <strong>Connor Crouch<\/strong> and <strong>Kelsey Pemberton<\/strong>, are collaborating with the U.S. Forest Service, including NAU alum <strong>Amanda Grady,<\/strong> to further understand the effects of OSS.<\/p>\n<p>Oystershell scale are sap-sucking insects. They are an invasive species, not native to this area but not necessarily new. Likely brought by European settlers in the 1700s, OSS is primarily causing ecological harm, and because aspens provide a critical habitat for many wildlife species, OSS damage has become problematic. Aspens produce more water than other forest types, something that is increasingly important in the dry climates of the Southwest.<\/p>\n<p>Crouch\u2019s dissertation focuses on determining where OSS occurs in Arizona, quantifying its impact and identifying what influences the presence and severity of OSS. Since beginning his research, Crouch has been surprised to see how pervasive OSS already is in northern Arizona. The team found evidence of invasions in four of Arizona\u2019s six national forests (Coconino,\u00a0Kaibab, Prescott and Apache-Sitgreaves).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-08-at-1.53.52-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-65381 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-08-at-1.53.52-PM.png\" alt=\"oystershell scale\" width=\"265\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-08-at-1.53.52-PM.png 848w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-08-at-1.53.52-PM-300x248.png 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-08-at-1.53.52-PM-768x635.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a>Like Arizona\u2019s snowbirds, OSS prefers warmer climates, the team hypothesizes. This increases the pressure to better understand the species and mitigation strategies as temperatures continue to rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEither the climate used to control the population (cold temperatures in the winter), or the warming climate has greatly increased aspen stress and thus susceptibility to OSS, or an interaction between these factors,\u201d Waring said. \u201cThe concern is that OSS is rapidly killing the smaller and younger trees, which are the future forest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The OSS are skilled assassins, and there is a sense of urgency to understand the insects before losing an entire host species from our forests.<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t all bad, though.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were also surprised, but encouraged, to find that the insect only occurs in lower elevation aspen stands,\u201d Crouch said. \u201cFor\u00a0example, you can find it in the aspen forests in and immediately around\u00a0Flagstaff, but it doesn\u2019t occur on\u00a0the higher elevation aspen stands on\u00a0the San Francisco Peaks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, what can be done about OSS? That is the million-dollar question! That is where Pemberton comes in. She is pursuing a master\u2019s in forestry, and her research is focused on finding a way to control the OSS population. While there are options like prescribed burns and clear-felling, Pemberton is looking into natural predators as a way to control the spread of OSS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no record of their natural predators in Arizona literature,\u201d she said. \u201cI am trying to identify all the common types of predators of OSS that occur naturally\u2014in other words, we are not introducing any predators that do not already exist in the environment. These natural predators are all insects, and if we determine which one functions best, then we can release large numbers of these predators into the landscape to reduce and control the amount of OSS.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Unknown-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-65380 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Unknown-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"407\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2022\/02\/Unknown-1.jpeg 1280w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2022\/02\/Unknown-1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2022\/02\/Unknown-1-1024x682.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2022\/02\/Unknown-1-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pemberton is finding that natural predator populations are different between urban and natural environments. Despite assuming that natural environments have more natural predators, early reports are showing that urban settings might actually have the upper hand.
