{"id":65039,"date":"2022-01-11T11:00:50","date_gmt":"2022-01-11T18:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=65039"},"modified":"2022-01-11T11:00:50","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T18:00:50","slug":"shades-of-route-66","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/shades-of-route-66\/","title":{"rendered":"Shining a light on diversity along Arizona&#8217;s Mother Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While Route 66 is well known for its iconic diners and gas stations, roadside attractions and highway signs, a new project aims to celebrate a lesser-known aspect often found across the tracks or a few blocks off of America\u2019s main street: its diversity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Shades of Route 66 in Arizona: Celebrating Diversity along Arizona\u2019s Historic Route 66<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fat Northern Arizona University\u2019s Cline Library will explore, document and share stories, voices and images of underrepresented people and communities who contributed to the diverse\u202fcultural and socioeconomic landscape along the road in Arizona. Top photo credit: Morton Andreassen on Unsplash<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The interns will develop the project under the guidance of Runge; Cline Library archivist and project director <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sean Evans;<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and subject experts <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ricardo Guthrie<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u202fassociate professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies at NAU, and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mark Manone<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, chair of NAU\u2019s Department of Geography and Planning. Along the way the interns will develop their skill with historical research methodologies, synthesis of information, digital\u202fstorytelling and more.\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Primary source collections in Special Collections and Archives are the foundation for the interns\u2019 research. Examples include the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.library.nau.edu\/digital\/collection\/cpa\/search\/searchterm\/moving%20image!Los%20Recuerdos%20del%20Barrio%20en%20Flagstaff\/field\/type!relati\/mode\/exact!exact\/conn\/and!and\/page\/1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Los Recuerdos del Barrio en Flagstaff<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdm16748.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/cpa\/search\/searchterm\/African%20American%20Pioneers%20in%20Flagstaff%20Oral%20History%20Collection\/field\/relati\/mode\/exact\/conn\/and\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">African American Pioneers of Flagstaff<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> oral history projects; the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdm16748.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/cpa\/search\/searchterm\/Fronske%20Studio\/field\/relati\/mode\/exact\/conn\/and\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fronske Studio<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdm16748.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/cpa\/search\/searchterm\/Running%2C%20John\/field\/relati\/mode\/exact\/conn\/and\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">John Running<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> photograph collections; and the records of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historic66az.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The interns\u202fwill\u202falso\u202fuse\u202fthe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcollections.nypl.org\/collections\/the-green-book#\/?tab=about\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Green Book<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, phone books and reverse directories and newspapers to identify businesses that were run by or served a diverse clientele on or near Route 66.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Melan and Pacheco have already been on the road\u2014literally\u2014with Evans, a highly regarded Route 66 historian. A series of field trips for primary source collection will begin to fill in gaps in areas that have been traditionally underrepresented or undocumented. Guthrie, who brings years of teaching and researching in the area of communicating diversity through the written and spoken word to the project, has the members of the project team reading Matt Ruff\u2019s \u201cLovecraft Country,\u201d which may be fantastical fiction but also provides a good immersion into the culture and politics of race and travel along America\u2019s highways.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Later in the project, Manone will <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the interns <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> ArcGIS web mapping software<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> they\u2019ll use to develop the StoryMap. Photo by Sean Evans.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shades of Route 66 in Arizona <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was inspired by the Los Angeles Public Library project titled\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapl.org\/collections-resources\/photo-collection\/shades-la\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Shades of L.A.: A Search for Visual Ethnic History<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
