{"id":64866,"date":"2021-12-13T11:28:54","date_gmt":"2021-12-13T18:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=64866"},"modified":"2022-01-05T08:04:43","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T15:04:43","slug":"jaime-begay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/jaime-begay\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Jaime Begay: Two-time Lumberjack found motivation in the the resilience of her community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Community\u00a0health\u00a0has always been a driving factor for\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jaime Begay<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It also influenced her choice for graduate school; Begay, who had already graduated from NAU with a bachelor\u2019s degree, came back\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0master\u2019s of public health\u00a0(MPH)\u00a0program that had an Indigenous health track that aligned with, and allowed her to continue, her work in her tribal community.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At no point has this work been more important than now because COVID-19 hit tribal nations especially hard. In addition to public health research and outreach, Begay, who is Din\u00e9, spent time focused on the most basic needs in her community, delivering wellness boxes to families in Tuba City and working to gather and distribute essential resources like food, medicine, oximeters, PPE, toiletries and cleaning products.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe value of that experience stems from my appreciation and responsibility I feel for my community,\u201d she said. \u201cThrough that experience, resilience was the foundation of our efforts.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That resilience has helped her throughout her work. At NAU, Begay with the Center for Health Equity Research as a graduate research assistant with the Navajo Native American Research Center for Health (NARCH). The partnership between NAU and Din\u00e9 College helps to foster the Indigenous public health workforce through education and improve community health on the Navajo Nation.\u00a0 She worked as a teaching assistant at Din\u00e9 College and helped mentor students and provided guidance for American Indian undergraduate students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-64868\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GradPic2JPG-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Jaime Begay\" width=\"336\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/12\/GradPic2JPG-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/12\/GradPic2JPG-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/12\/GradPic2JPG-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/12\/GradPic2JPG-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/12\/GradPic2JPG-1365x2048.jpg 1365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/>The public health program requires a practicum, so Begay helped facilitate courses for the Din\u00e9 College Summer Research Enhancement Program. She has significant other research experience as well, including working in behavioral health research at Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health. She worked as a program coordinator for Asdza\u0301a\u0301n Be\u2019eena\u2019, a research trial that supports native girls who are 10 to 14 years old and their female caregivers through a program grounded on Navajo culture and community.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And, like all students completing their degree this year, Begay had to cope with going to school during the pandemic.\u00a0She leaned\u00a0in to\u00a0the technological side of it,\u00a0including facilitating virtual information sessions to help recruit students to the\u00a0MPH\u00a0program and\u00a0helping to plan and put on the Navajo Nation Human Research Review Board virtual conference. In addition to helping with registration, answering emails and working on other logistics, she also presented on the Asdza\u0301a\u0301n\u00a0Be\u2019eena\u2019 project to the almost 400 attendees. This conference is vital to research on the Navajo Nation, she said, because the attendees go through each research project to ensure it is ethical and relevant to the Navajo people.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She found community in her MPH cohort; Begay\u2019s classmates leaned on each other\u00a0and\u00a0worked closely despite the pandemic-mandated distancing, and the \u201cpublic health trailblazers\u201d who are on the faculty supported the cohort throughout their challenging program. Begay\u2019s biggest\u00a0challenge, however,\u00a0actually ended\u00a0up being a little of her own making\u2014juggling two part-time jobs and her classes made keeping on top of everything rather difficult.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThank goodness for my color-coded calendar and my\u00a0Post-It\u00a0reminders,\u201d she laughed. \u201cHowever, multitasking and being pulled in different directions is the blueprint of public health, so I say this challenge was preparing me for my future.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now, as she is finishing her second degree and looking ahead to a third, Begay\u2019s commitment to public health advocacy is what drives her every day. That dedication actually started long before she came to NAU through a rather unexpected pathway. When she was 8 years old, her father suggested that she start participating in the jingle dress dance as a way to stay connected. For Begay, it was so much more.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe jingle dress dance is a healing dance and synonymous with my career path as a public health advocate,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to see health disparities lifted from native communities.
