{"id":64622,"date":"2021-11-22T11:28:24","date_gmt":"2021-11-22T18:28:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=64622"},"modified":"2021-11-22T11:36:27","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T18:36:27","slug":"lumberjack-thanksgiving-traditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/lumberjack-thanksgiving-traditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Lumberjack Thanksgiving traditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">During a time known for overindulging on food and spending time with family and friends, we asked our Lumberjack community about their favorite Thanksgiving traditions.\u00a0Here are their responses.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tablecloth of memories<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe have a tablecloth that we use on the Thanksgiving table every year. Each year,\u00a0family and guests write what they are thankful for that year in permanent marker along with their initials and the date. This is a tradition of almost 30 years, and there&#8217;s not a lot of space left on the tablecloth! Every year when we sit down for Thanksgiving dinner, before saying grace, everyone seems to end up holding their plate in the air to read the messages from previous years. Lots of laughter and fun stories come forward from those previous message&#8230; good times!\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hope DeMello<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Department of Educational Psychology<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Peanuts-style, please!<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">My family&#8217;s Thanksgiving always included my immediate family, my grandparents and my great-aunt and uncle. Because we didn&#8217;t want our older relatives driving at night, we would have our Thanksgiving meal for lunch instead of dinner. After everyone else went home and it was time for\u00a0actual\u00a0dinner, we&#8217;d still be\u00a0pretty full. So,\u00a0instead of making a whole new meal, we&#8217;d put popcorn, toast, pretzel sticks and\u00a0jelly\u00a0beans\u00a0on a big plate\u00a0and watch the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special while enjoying our Peanuts-style Thanksgiving dinner!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hannah Marshall<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, studying Secondary Education, History\/Social Studies<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">10 a.m. at the dive bar\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cInstead of Black Friday shopping\u00a0in the\u00a0morning, my family and I get together at a local dive bar\u2014the kind of bar that is so dark inside it takes your eyes at least 10 minutes to adjust. We sit and chat and catch up, this time without all the stress of making sure things get out of ovens and onto tables, and gossip about the happenings at the meal the day before. But the one constant is that my husband cooks an amazing turkey! (Here he is carving it\u00a0whilst\u00a0my brother eagerly awaits.)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Chel<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">sea Westfall<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, pursuing a M.A. in English Literature<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Celebrating Native American heritage<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cAs a proud Native American, this is the perfect time to spend time with family and share stories about our ancestors to the younger generations. Every Thanksgiving we break out the arts and crafts supplies and make decorations for the table and place settings. We save them each year,\u00a0and it&#8217;s fun to look back and see how much she&#8217;s grown through the things she&#8217;s made. Recently, we also started capping off our Thanksgiving night by getting a Groupon for Christmas at the Princess and strolling through the hotel grounds and taking in all the holiday lights!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Maria\u00a0DeCabooter<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, NAU\u00a0Social Media\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Morning meander<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cA long hike in the morning, even if we\u00a0have to\u00a0drive to a lower elevation because of bad weather here on the mountain. My two absolute must-haves\u00a0on the Thanksgiving dining\u00a0room table are: sweet and hot sausage cornbread stuffing and homemade, garlic\u00a0smashed\u00a0potatoes!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mitch\u00a0Strohman<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, NAU-TV\u00a0and\u00a0Voice of the Lumberjacks<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Puzzlin\u2019 for days!<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cAfter the dinner is done and the dishes\u00a0put\u00a0away, our family eats pie and works on a very large jigsaw puzzle. This goes on for two or three days.
